I don't like my colleges anymore

Which schools are reaches for me? I know Stony Brook and BU are. I already got into Stony Brook.

I think they are saying is that some of the schools you were accepted into are really good already.

Well so far I have been accepted into all my safeties, plus Stony Brook and UMass. Well, I hope so, but I really don’t want to make a bad decision because this would be the second time transferring if I don’t like it. And I could pay for any of my schools and I could pay for BU but it’s not something I am super excited about. But I think it’ll be worth it if I get in.

You’ve been accepted at University of Massachusetts/Amherst ?

If so you have to go visit for a weekend or some classes. It’s an awesome place to go school and really strong in many fields.

Plus, the best food in the country. Building the new student union opening next fall with a theme like a city walk with food and study options. It’s going to be great.

Sports are good and currently the top ranked men’s hockey team in the country. Could very well win the frozen four. The students are having a blast with the team.

Top 30 public and number 70 in usnwr. It’s really really good. If you are into cs or ai research it’s a top 5 school.

Are you saying that you are applying as a transfer student? Where are you now? I am confused.

With your stats you have a chance at BU CGS only if you chose that option.

Hi, TomSrOfBoston, I applied Undecided to College of Arts and Sciences. Still think I have a chance?

Unfortunately, I also clicked “no” to that option… I am really annoyed at myself right now, I should have read more carefully. I am going to call admissions now and ask to fix this.

@twogirls Hi, I am a senior in high school, I am not happy anymore with the colleges that I applied to and I’m trying to get advice. I already have the thought of transferring because I don’t know if I’d like any of my colleges.

Hi, thanks for the input, this is interesting information to me and I want to consider it. As of now if I don’t get into BU, I am heavily considering UMass.

@collegemom9 hi, what schools on my list look like reaches?

In looking at your list I see you chose a lot of out of (NY) state public schools - those will be affordable at out of state rates? Just checking.

Amherst is a very cool college town. But not a city.

My D loved Temple. It is very much in the city. There’s a really nice honors dorm, and actually really nice not-honors dorms too. And it’s diverse.

I think you have a very nice list of schools to choose from, even if you don’t get accepted to BU. Congrats on your acceptances so far.

Temple is a match for you…based on the numbers reported earlier. I think you may really like it… it’s in a city, it’s diverse, etc. As many have indicated, college is what you make of it and you will be challenged at any of these schools.

@twogirls Hi, I really don’t think Temple is a match for me, considering it’s very low on prestige scale and I do not like that. Also, I didn’t get any scholarship, my stats are also higher than theirs. No offense to them but I think I could get into higher schools (such as Stony Brook and UMass).

Am I missing something… you’re talking about a “prestige scale” but you have a 1250 SAT? Is that number correct?
Temple average SAT seems to be just slightly under yours around 1230, so many students will have the same or higher SAT as you.
BU average SAT for the last admissions cycle was 1468, likely higher this year. It’s hard to get up the “prestige scale” (whatever that is) without the stats.

What is this mythical prestige scale you’re referring to? Temple is a well respected university and you can get no more urban. Seems you are really confused about what you want.

Temple 75th% for math is 650 and for reading it is 660. I thought these scores were a match for you based on your scores that were reported earlier, but it’s not my intention to argue that point with you because you have some very good acceptances and finances do not seem to be an issue. Congrats!

I am also confused by the issue with prestige…BU is a great school, but so are all the schools on your list and you will find very passionate students at all of them. Success will be based on you, and not the school.

^ I’m guessing it’s prestigiosity rather than prestige.

But that’s ok. OP: If you don’t like Temple no problem (and I’m guessing you can’t get into their honors college, they like to see a 1400+, so, while it’s excellent, it’s not moving the needle for Temple).
UMass Amherst is excellent. It’s not in a city but a college town is like a city that’s dedicated to college students.
Same thing for Penn State but it’s much bigger - UMass Amherst would be more livable.
SUNYs are good - depending on your major, you might want to add Albany and Plattsburgh, which are in cities.
You have UScranton, St Louis University, St Michaels’, UMaine Orono, USC Columbia, College of Charleston… All in cities.
If you don’t get into a university you like you can always use the NACAC list of colleges that miscalculated yield, it’s published around May 5.

Buffalo is a city too, though SUNY-B is a little outside it.

Stonybrook…well that’s Long Island. Not a city, kind of a string of suburb-towns…(there are actually two cities on LI besides the parts of NYC on it, but only one of the two has a non-Rabbinical college in it and that one is a very specialized SUNY).

I live in Philly suburbs and I can assure you there are many very successful Temple grads. If you don’t like it because you don’t like its atmosphere or it doesn’t offer your major, that’s one thing. But “prestige” can mean different things to different people - don’t get hung up on it.

Our well respected high school sends a lot of smart students to Temple, including kids who take advantage of their scholarships to save money for grad/med/law school.
