I don't think college is for poor people

The OP is largely correct. Schools that meet need without large debt are those most can’t get into.

While there are colleges poor B students can afford, they are not the dream colleges many had in mind. There is a popular myth that there is a perfect college experience available to all.

The typical poor student in the US attends a CC while working.

Or the local directional state U while working and living at home.

If there is a four-year directional state U that’s close enough to commute to, then there is a lot to be said for starting at the four-year place instead of the CC even if it’s a bit more expensive and requires a few more Stafford loans.

UW-Madison gave me 100% of need and put me in a program where I will be primarily given grants for four years. Tuition, housing, books…everything they put in the full cost of attendance is covered, and I’ll likely be getting some money back. It will be helpful after freshman year when I move to an apartment, I get the money I would spend on dorms to help pay for that. That being said, I’m extremely poor, so I don’t know how hard it is to get into that program. However, college will be basically free for me…I bet many other schools have something similar to this.

The basic problem is that you want a school that you think is high quality and offers financial aid, yet you aren’t competitive for those schools. I don’t understand complaining about not being able to afford College from someone who isn’t truly impoverished.

The bottom line is that if you want to go to a school for cheap, you’re going to have to go somewhere that your grades are high for. If you want to go to a school that matches your academic performance, you’re going to have to take out loans or work jobs or find a way to pay somehow. Its not about being poor, its just about being in a market–and its hardly insurmountable to pay for a decent school.

Well that’s what student loans are for. After college, you get a job and pay them off. Debt is the American way! hahaa duhh OP :p
