I don't think I'd be a good fit for UChicago after all (Overnight Session).

On the FB group kitkatkatie mentioned, there are also various PSAC and other Chicago students who are happy to talk about life in their various houses, ECs, classes, the merits of Scav Hunt, Kuvia, etc.

UChicago not geeky? You’ve got to be kidding me. I thought us applicants were the epitome of geeky…

UChicago not geeky? You’ve got to be kidding me. I thought us applicants were the epitome of geeky…

^ I met kids who were definitely geeky. I also met kids I wouldn’t have pegged as geeky.

But everyone I met had a genuine love of learning–that was the one common thread between people who were otherwise quite different. So I suppose if you look at it that way, Chicago is geeky. Just don’t expect everyone to be steeped in nerd culture.

I heard like they moved the police station further south too, so to boost safety around the university.

I don’t know why people complain about Hyde Park. I like the area. I go into New York City on a regular basis, so when I heard everyone say that Hyde Park was crappy I was thinking of the slums of Brooklyn or Queens, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the area was not bad at all. Chicago is a great city too. It is a smaller, cleaner, and more polite version of NYC.

And I don’t think there is any particular reason to be overly worried about campus safety. When I walked around campus I felt like I was in a little bubble. Safty never once crossed my mind…

Oh, I also wouldn’t have minded a tad more nerdiness.

Campus seemed safe, off-campus seemed a little sketchy, but that’s probably because I’m a suburban noob.

I’m basing this on the orange line I took to Midway airport (on the 55 bus.)

I’ve taken the blue, green, and red lines, and also the 6, x28, and 55 buses… all of them seemed pretty good. The green line was definitely the most sketch (people say the red line is the worst, but it’s actually pretty decent-- it’s the green line that’s bad), but I was always with at least one other person, so I felt safe.

I walked south of campus late at night (with seven boys… group of prospies) and felt fine. Yes, it got a little sketch, but it was nothing I couldn’t handle, even if I had been alone.

From this, I must conclude that I should be very social and always have a friend there to make me feel safe. And, always go to well-populated parties, so there will be people around.

Honestly, the neighborhood seemed pretty decent. I’ve seen much worse, and I felt pretty comfortable late at night. It seems like it’s been pretty well gentrified.
