If I had a $1 for every kid that is not graduating because of gym. Yes, in NY if you don't pass gym, you don't graduate and not graduating (successfully completing high school is a reason to have your admission rescinded).

Right now I have a kid who needs to make up 5 gyms and is going along like everything is ok and she is going to graduate in june. Student is programmed for 2 and is failing both of them. Contacted the parent and the student refuses to take the course in PM school, satuday school or do an independent study in P.E. We will be together again next year when she is back in day high school taking gym.

I agree with mom2three. As the GC I will refuse advocate for a student who is failing because they did not attend classes (when my kids come to me with the woe is me about a teacher or a class, the first thing I do is pull the student's attendance and cut report). As far as I am concerned attendance is pretty black and white; either you were there or you were not. If a student was out because they were medically excused that is one thing, but all of my students know, that if they are failing classes because they cut or blew off the class, it just sucks to be you.

To grovel, beg, cut deals etc. to the teacher or the guidance counselor is not only disrespectful the the educational professional, but it is disrespectful to all of those who also hate "0", "1st" or "8th" period gym but show up because they need the class to graduate. It sends a message that their is a 2tier system and the rules for everyone else does not apply to you. 1st period gym, so that this is one discussion that we can totally avoid.

I agree with the recommendation that the OP gets up tomorrow morning, show up dressed and prepared to work in gym to see what can be done to turn things around (s/he can leave the house dressed and change at the end of the period).
