I'm in my first semester at college and I already feel like I'm messing up. I've got a ton of work and the pile just seems to keep getting bigger and bigger.

I took my first psychology quiz two weeks ago and got a perfect score. I screwed the last two quizzes up really bad and I've got my first exam today which I don't feel prepared for at all. I honestly think it's just way too much work for me to handle right now... I'm taking 16 credits this semester alone.

There's a very high chance that I'll fail this test... I've got three more exams after this and 8 more quizzes (at least), and a final. I'm trying hard to stay on top of things but let's say I make a few C's this semester (as a final grade). Do you think I just screwed myself over?

I was always such a good student in high school but it's like I'm falling so behind in college.
Is there any hope for me!!? I'm on a scholarship and I'm getting really frustrated. =[

Go to the Student Center and see if there are any study seminars to help you study smarter. You may have bad study habits or time management problems. Sign up for peer tutors if available. You get to get a handle on it before you risk losing your scholarship.

Plan everything you do…set aside time everyday to study for one of your classes, regardless if you have a quiz/test/assignment…16 credits may seem like a lot but all the engineers are taking that or more…work all week and drink your face off on fri or sat to reward yourself…the college year is short, just pound that **** into ya and you’ll be fine.

Ha I feel your pain. I’m also here on a scholarship, and in the honors program to boot…

I bombed a pop quiz in my biology class so feeling a little discouraged. But I have an exam coming up soon and I plan to study my heart out >.>. So I should probably get off the CC forums haha.

There are probably less than a dozen institutions where getting a C after fully committing to the work is acceptable/possible/etc. If you’re falling behind on studying to the point of failing exams, you really need to spend less time socializing and more time studying, UNLESS you’re experiencing some disability holding you back (e.g depression.) If the latter is the case, get help for it, the university will have resources in place for this.

What are your other classes, and how are you doing in them? Do you find yourself being overwhelmed only in psych, or is psych just one instance? If psych is the only class you’re doing poorly in, it might be the material that’s difficult as opposed to some broader issue. However, if you’re doing poorly in all your classes, then you need to reassess how you’re studying.

If there’s a lot of information, you might try organizing it into an overall narrative that makes sense for you. If you find lectures hard to follow, you might try doing the reading before going to class (and then read it once again after to reinforce the material). To help you learn, outline the textbook instead of just skimming the text.

It might take you awhile to figure out how to best study for this class. When you don’t know what or how you should study, the material seems a lot more daunting. If I were you, I’d use the first couple of quizzes and the first exam to see where you’re weak (are you bad at answering a certain type of question, or do you just not retain facts?) and then readjusting your study plans to address those weaknesses. Of course, if you feel like this class is honestly too difficult for you, and you don’t particularly enjoy the material, then you should pass/fail it or drop it, provided that you don’t lose your scholarship.
