Im going to start my freshman year in the 18th of Sep in Bahcesehir University in Istanbul, Turkey.
My grades in high-school were 93%… however I ended up in a university ranked only about 1900 in the world… I’m planning to get a masters degree in Australia after if that helps…
Btw I ended in such university because I wasted so much time applying for a Canadian study visa… however I was rejected.
Hope someone can cheer up so I dont feel discouraged while studying
You’re an 18 year old kid. You’re surrounded by professors who have advanced degrees, ready and willing to educate you. All you have to do is be open to it.
I’m one of those people who really, REALLY don’t care about those rankings I read so much about here. I think that any college has the potential to significantly broaden your horizons and open you up to a whole new world— if you choose to let it.
If you really don’t want to attend this university, take a gap year.
Or apply to Clearing in the UK (there were over 100,000 students who didn’t meet their conditions due to the new exams so lots of universities have spaces. Check out Dundee, Stirling, Abertay, Edinburgh Napier, in Scotland, plus Queen’s Belfast and UCardiff. Other top-ranked universities have spaces too but it depends on the program -“course” - and how fast you get moving. )
Why was the study visa rejected, do you know? Could other countries reject you too? (Where were you admitted in Canada?)
First of all, most world university rankings are based upon research productivity and other aspects of research. I have never seen a world university ranking that took into consideration things that undergraduates should actually care about (like quality of classroom teaching and mentoring, for example). So I’m not sure that’s useful anyway.
Even if it were, though, a university ranked 1900, that’s actually probably in the top 10% of universities worldwide if not higher. I’ve seen several estimates for how many universities there are in the world, ranging from 20,000 to 40,000. Even if we go conservative and say that there are 20,000, a university ranked 1900 would be in the top 9.5% of universities in the world.
It’s also important to consider that where you go for undergrad isn’t nearly as important as what you do there.
Do you have any idea how many people would love to be in your shoes? You will be attending a 4 year college. I suggest you stop thinking about rankings and start focusing on how to make the most of your opportunity. Take challenging courses and do your best, develop relationships both with your fellow students and with professors you admire, get involved in campus life. Your expereince will have more to do with how much time, effort, and energy you put into the next four years than the ranking of the college.
And FWIW once again @juillet is correct – a ranking of 1900 in the world appears to be quite good.
The situation is totally different in Turkey. Your job depends on who you know or where you went to school.
There can be reasons why a student wants to/needs to leave Turkey.
Reasons for visa refusal also matter.
seize it, nonetheless. this is your college life, make the most of it. sign up for things out of your course, make new friends, learn stuff, journal about it, click pictures. you’ll have a lifetime’s worth experiences to talk about it. CARPE DIEM.
Feel blessed about attending a four year college. Start with a good attitude and do all that you can to succeed now so that you will have opportunities in the future to go elsewhere if that is a path you should take. You very well may love your current situation and be happy that you didn’t end up overseas. Stay positive!
