I got a early action decision even though I didn't apply for early action??

I submitted my commonapp to Uchicago before the early action deadline, but had a lot of stuff at school 2 weeks before deadline(literally worst 2 weeks of my life). I didn't finish the supplement, and I called the school and asked them to change my application from early action to regular decision which they told me they did.
I just logged on my account today and they had a decision for me on December 18th. I was deferred even though on december 18th I still haven't submitted my teacher recs and supplement yet, only my commonapp. I got all of those stuff sent in like january 1st.

Should I contact them? Will being deferred affect my chances? When they review my application again will they know that I didn't submit my stuff the first time?

The “deferral” was probably just their way of implementing your request to change the app from early action to regular decision. Though I am a little confused why you submitted the application in the first place if it was not finished. Was this just an oversight?

It won’t make any difference for regular decision - assuming it is now complete they will assess it along with all the others. I do not believe anyone is penalized because they were deferred and transferred to the regular decision pool.

I changed the app from EA to ED though during November, and the decision thing was December 18th, which I believe is the day where they give out decisions for early action.
The reason I didn’t submit my supplement was because I had a couple projects going on and had a whole bunch of tests during that week and I didn’t get around to finishing the supplement before the deadline.
Thanks

If it is bothering you, then call or email them and ask. It is probably just the way they process an application that gets changed from EA to RD.
