I graduated with a low GPA, how can I improve for graduate school admissions

I graduated from college with a low GPA. Too low to get into graduate school. What can I do to improve my chances. Any thoughts or suggestions?

How low? Most graduate programs state 3.0 as a minimum. If you are under that or close to that low, your best bet is to go volunteer with a professor who does research in the field you want to pursue. Prove that your GPA is not indicative of your potential and your current maturity. Be prepared to try for a, master’s first and to not be funded initially. You will have to prove yourself worthy of a schools investment in time and funding.

Ask in the grad school forum, but include the field and the gpa and if you had research experience or what the situation is.

First, are you interested in graduate or professional school? For some professional school degrees at some universities, evening/weekend programs – complemented by several years of excellent post-Bachelor’s experience – may (no guarantee) provide an admissions alternative (in comparison to full-time professional school matriculation).

How low, and who says?

Well, where do you want to go, what are your criteria (support, for example), and what have you done so far? The typical steps for someone in your position would be to take graduate-level classes at a convenient college and try to get some research experience.

Why is your GPA low?
How did you do in your major?
Do you have money to pay for a masters?
Why do you want to go to grad school?
Do you have a professor that you were close to in undergrad in your major? If so, talk to them and see if they can see a plan forward. Can you take post-Baccalaureate classes? Those will count toward your GPA.
