I hate my major what should I do?

I’m currently a Senior and a Physical Education major with a minor in Health Education. All I have left is this semester and student teaching in the Fall. But the thing is that I totally hate my major. I hate going to all of my classes and I absolutely hate peer teaching, which we do very frequently. I’ve also done several clinical experiences and did not enjoy them as well. My experience in this major program at this school has been horrible and I hate everything about it. Recently I’ve been very dissapointed and depressed that I chose a major that I don’t like. The only reason why I chose PE was because my cousin was majoring in PE as well and said that it was “super easy.” From my experience at my school it is not easy at all and it involves TONS of work. I hate my major so bad that I’ve even thought of dropping out. I knew I should’ve done accounting and I regret making this rash decision and choosing this major. On the other hand, I do have a cumulative gpa of 3.8 which has taken so much work and I’m starting to feel like I don’t know if it was all worth it. Should I just finish this major and do something else in Graduate school or should I just start all over again? (Which I don’t really want to) . Please any advice will help thanks in advance.

I’m sorry you’re so unhappy. Teaching definitely isn’t for everyone. At this point, I would probably just finish up, since you’re graduating in three months anyway. Many jobs don’t require a degree in a particular thing, they just want to see that you have a BA in anything. You can always go to grad school later on if you need to get a degree in something more specific.

I, too, feel badly that you are unhappy. My D got her masters and taught for one year before deciding she didn’t like the classroom. However, she doesn’t regret her education and now works in ed tech.

If you still want to do accounting, can you start taking classes in it? It’s now, I believe, 150 credit program but I am not certain how many of your gen eds or courses in your major, etc., could transfer towards that amount. Perhaps you can focus your teacher training towards business classes, so you can teach things like accounting or business law?

Here’s another idea - finish your teaching degree (but throw in accounting based classes if you can) and then get a job teaching. Use the money you earn to pay for the classes you need to complete an accounting degree, perhaps as a second bachelors. if you use teaching as a means to accomplish your ultimate goal of being an accountant, that might make teaching more pleasant and rewarding for you.

Good luck.

Whatever you do, graduate. Then you have many more choices in jobs (even if not in education.
Maybe take classes in business/accounting and then get involved in managing a gym or something.
