I have a mild learning disability. What colleges are best for me?

As i start my senior year I realize there is so much to look at and consider in my college search. It's an extremely important step in my life and i want to make the right decision. From an early age it was pronounced that i had a mild learning disability. I've been placed in special needs classes in the past but i've managed to work myself out of them. I'm very motivated and I plan on doing something i love. with that comes a lot of work and i'm willing to devote myself to it and push myself to my fullest potential. I'm thinking about studying sign language, child psychology, or something in the field of psychology. I've only taken my SAT's once, I got a 1240/2400, and i have a 3.0 gpa. I plan on raising my SAT's a few hundred points, and i'm taking a few honors courses. I've also been dancing for 13 years and dancing competitively for 7. I know i've got a lot to offer but i can only hope they see more of a person who's willing to improve and make a change, instead of mediocre scores.
These are schools i plan on applying to. Do i have a chance?
-High Point University, NC
-Elon University, NC
-Salve Regina, RI
-Keene State, NH
-Uconn, CT

Suggestions for schools would be greatly appreciated =)

High Point - never occurred to me that HP would be considered a school that would help a unique student “push themself to their fullest potential”

Elon - Loves students with passion. Will look at and reward commitment and potential in unique students, but I’m note sure that even adding several hundred points to your SAT will get you close.

Don’t know about the others.

Have you looked at Goshen College ?

Know I could not help much but if you find a school that you think fits, fight for it and show them what you have to offer. just don’t fall in love with any one school.

“I’m very motivated and I plan on doing something i love. with that comes a lot of work and i’m willing to devote myself to it” - Every school wants that kind of student,

Good luck

Ah thats no fun. Well, i’m a fighter. I’ve been fighting for years and i’m not about to stop. I can’t. With people like me, taking a mix of special needs and regular classes through out the years the teachers have been significantly different. With my high school the higher the class, the better the teacher. (at least thats how it seems and i’m sure that goes for lots of other schools) I’ve been in basic classes where teachers just yell and teach, and others where i’ve been in honors classes and you can tell they put a lot of thought into their lesson plans. They genuinely love what they do. Just joining honors classes within the past year, i felt gypped. Going into a college i want a good education and i wont just settle because my numbers might not be above average. The better the college, the better the eduction. Right?

I live in CT, and i plan on staying semi close. Maybe within 5 hours. It’s rather difficult finding a place that would accept me under my circumstances. But i’m looking for a school with a nice campus, great abroad program as well as a psychology program, and a school with a competitive dance team. Heeeeelp? haha
By the way, thank you tons for responding to my last post!

How about “U Mass Dartmouth” - The artsy U Mass is on the Mass/RI border and has a competitive student-run dance team. Lots of students are allowed be themselves and succeed too.

Thanks for the suggestion! It looks like a nice school. As well as the other U mass campus’ According to naviance, one of the campus’ are accepting at my current score. Which I find kind of funny. I was also wondering is it possible to schedule interviews with certain schools? I feel that with reach schools if i were to talk and explain myself it would be much more effective then looking at my transcript. And how do you feel about northeastern in boston?

Maybe you should look at “how do you stack up” section of collegeboard.com

look at the Mid SAT range and know that if you are below that, you have to bring something very strong to the table (usually a sport). I’m very sure your great but you must have at least the minimum (lower 25% plus a hook) or your wasting your time and money on the application. Keep exploring till it feels like a great fit FOR YOU…

You might want to investigate Rider University in NJ.

“Rider is a private, coeducational university located on 280 beautiful acres on two campuses in New Jersey – one in Lawrenceville and one in Princeton”

Rider does not have a specified GPA, rank or test score that it uses as a cut-off for admission. (they are known for looking at the whole student)

Rider offers many good programs including a Fine Arts Degree with a Concentration in Dance or a Minor in Dance. An active study abroad program. Check and see if they have a Major that interests you, and they do allow interviews.

I’m sure many good schools will fit you well so look at Rider but as I said before “just don’t fall in love with any one school”.

I bet you will do great at whatever you decide…

I would suggest looking at Augsburg College in St.Paul. It is a well known school offering a great education.
