<p>Societies acting through their governments make the rules to state which acts are illegal, but although war is the most violent of human activities, it has not been declared illegal by any of the world’s governments or their agencies.</p>
<p>CB said that "to state" must be "stating", but why ? "to state" here modifies the socities, not the rules.</p>
<p>2)Are these sentences correct ?
- The Prize was awarded to Tom having a pleasant voice.
- The Prize was awarded to Tom, having a pleasant voice.</p>
<p>When we encouter a sentence: "A do(es) something to B, doing something else,
how do we determine whether the "doing something else" modifies A or B ?</p>
<p>3)How about this ?
- Tom having a plesant voice received the Prize.
- Tom who has a plesant voice received the Prize.
Is there any difference between the two sentences ?</p>
<p>4)The hollow body of an acoustic guitar, which acts as a sound box to project sound, must be in appropriate size.
Is it correct, "which acts as ... " modifies the hollow body, but is placed right after "an acoustic guitar" ??? Can it be misunderstood that it modifies "guitar"</p>
