I HAVE to get my scores up, can I do it?

I'm not looking at Ivies or top-tier schools, my score is fine for the colleges I'm looking at (Besides Georgetown, the only top tier school I'd say I'm interested in but as of now it's a reach). However, I want to do this for personal achievement. I really just want to break 2100 on this test.

1st SAT: CR:590 M:470 W:530 Essay:8
I was in absolute shock at this point. For being a person who never got anything less than an A in advanced honors math classes, I felt terrible about it. The other two I didn't really care for but math was supposed to be my strong point and I have not a clue how I scored that low.

2nd SAT: CR:550 M:500 W:640 Essay:10
I practiced my math on a daily basis for a whole month for this test. My score only went up 30 points and I was devastated. This math score does not reflect my abilities and that bothers me. I plan on taking some new strategies for math in October. I didn't do anything for CR I assumed I could easily get it up just by trying some new strategies, but that clearly didn't work. I looked up only three tips for writing and that clearly helped.

I need help to get these scores up. I plan on doing all the practice tests available in the blue book, I bought Barron's SAT guide, going to buy PWN the SAT Math and going to read all guides here on CC.

My question to you is can I do it and do you have any suggestions?

I just want to say I am in the same boat as you- i have been working extremely hard in high school- i have everything i need to get into the top schools, yet my sat score doesnt show that at all! im very worried. my gpa, activites, and school work is just fine. but i never knew sats would bring me down. RIGHT NOW - all we can do is practice and my final time will be october. first time i got 1580 (december) and second time i got 1710 (june)- I worked so hard for this! took prep course- got 1900s on practice tests, yet in the end i didnt get what i want. so just continue practicing. the blue book is great, try Gruber’s book, and McGraw Hill for critical reading- i heard it will help with vocab and stuff. and Good Luck! =)

Yes, you can! I started my practice tests off in the 1300’s and with a whole summer of preparation I got a score over 2100.

For math definitely use PWN THE SAT because it got me a 790.
For writing use Silverturtle and if you can use The Ultimate Guide to SAT Grammar
For CR only just actual tests that were created by CB

Good luck and you can definitely pull it off!

Definitely possible! I’m in a similar boat as you and will be purchasing Barron’s, PWN the SAT, and maybe Mcgraw Hill. You can do it as long as you work at it and apply yourself!

thank for the support! i just hope i can…the only part that scares me is i have been working extremely hard… feel like i wasted my parent’ money on prep course, yet i have no results. and this is my final time- so i hope atleast i can get to high 1800s or 1900s - i would be more than satisfied.

Have you thought about taking the ACT? A lot of people experiencing difficulty on the SAT were more successful on the ACT.

I have some advice – I aplogize in advance if you already know this or think that it’s too obvious – but I have seem many students who already invested lots of time and money into SAT prep without learning what I consider to be STEP ONE!

For a student who has a 500 in math and would REALLY like to get to the 600s, the most useful advice is often the hardest to believe…but I promise I have seen it work literally hundreds of times and many others here can tell you that as well. Here it is:

Slow down and stop trying to finish the sections. You can get your 600 by getting nearly all of the easy and medium questions right and then basically ignoring the last quarter of any math section – unless you see a particular problem type that you are sure you know how to do.

I have posted specific plans here:

[Keller’s Math SAT Game Plan](Keller's Math SAT Game Plan)

You click on your score goal and the chart updates, telling you what to answer and what to skip. These are not rigid, unbreakable rules, but following the spirit of these rules will increase your efficiency. I know it sounds obvious but let’s connect the dots:

You want a 600

You get points when you get things right.

You LOSE points when you get things wrong.

You have limited time.

Shouldn’t you take the test in a way that allows you to spend your limited time earning points rather than losing them? The students I see who start with that 500 raise their scores most easily by getting more of the easy and medim ones right and then hoping to pick up one or two hard ones at most.

very true! and thank you for the great advice! im truly considering it because i need to bring my score- i have just been practicing throughout during the summer. the problem with me is i have only once scored a 650 on a recent practice math test, but i have noticed that i usually get around 500s around my math sections because i make SILLY mistakes- that hurts me a lot and then when i reveiw my answers- i realize that i knew what i was doing but just wrote something wrong. so i will take my time and try your strategy because i love math!
