I have too many passions? Help deciding between a Theater Major or a Film Major? Or Neither? Please?

Hey, so I have quite an issue in my hands and I would really appreciate any help from anyone. For starters, I am quite an inconsistent person in many areas of my life- for example I’ve switched high schools three times already. However there are a few things I am for sure consistent about and that is acting and writing. I have been to visual arts high schools to find out that the only thing that really gave me life was performing and apparently I perform well. I’ve only been doing it for a few years but I love it soooo much that a week without going to the theat er gives me anxiety and many teachers tell me that I’m a good performer. I also love to write and that I have been doing all my life. I’ve dreamed about writing for television, film and making my own documentaries for years on end. I’ve thought about majoring in film because recently, after making a short film I enjoyed making, I’ve been thinking once again about being a filmmaker and pursuing screenwriting, however, I can’t help but think that if I do that, I can no longer perform and that scares me so much. A major in theater on the other hand, also prevents me from pursuing filmmaking. So, is it possible to major in film and pursue theater outside of school and still have a career in performing if I wish to in the future? I just see so many say that in order to really make connections and start a career in film or theater one has to go to school but I just can’t choose between the two. I’m so confused and lost??? I don’t even know if a degree in either is even worth it?? I don’t even know if my resume or portfolio is extensive enough or good enough for me to be accepted to any school. I could use some advice and I apologize that this is so long…

It sounds to me that a BA degree is the right course for you. Marymount Manhattan and Northwestern, to name just two, offer theater within a liberal arts framework, encouraging double majors, electives, etc, so you can get theater training while also pursuing other passions.

Major in English and pursue theatre/film as an EC, then specialize with a master’s degree if you have the talent.

Thank you for the help, I have considered both answers and it has helped to clear my head. Thank you.
