I am so confused about what to do. I have been accepted to the following colleges: Baylor(scholarship), Trinity, St. Mary’s(scholarship), Texas A&M(no scholarship), and UCLA(no scholarship). I have a 6.88/7 GPA( ranked 2/833), pretty good test scores( 5 on calc BC exam as a junior), and a national-level athlete( not enough for an athletic scholarship, but good enough as a walk-on), and decent leadership roles( coaching, tournament organizing, etc).
I am leaning towards attending TAMU but was shocked when I found out I am not getting any scholarships that I applied for… I assumed my grades were good enough( since I got into UCLA) and didn’t apply to out-of-school scholarships. Is there anything I can do now? Most of the deadlines have passed and I am really worried. I have worked really hard throughout high school and feel as if all of it was no use.
Thank you so much!
You appear to have received scholarships from private universities.
UCLA is a PUBLIC university, funded, in part, by the taxpayers of California.
I take it that you didn’t look at the website to read about the price or cost of attendance?
If you are NOT a resident of California, then your parents have not paid into the California system and you won’t receive one penny of financial aid. You will be expected to pay $65K per year.
The California public universities (UC’s and CSU’s) do not have the money to fund non-resident students. These universities were created for the state’s residents of California to have affordable options for college and university study.
The fact that these happen to be some of the best universities in the world, with the best locations and good weather, makes them very competitive and attractive to prospective students, but they’re not going be free.
I am assuming that you are not a resident of California but are a resident of Texas? TAMU is also a public school, so they also depend on limited taxpayer dollars to fund their schools.
With the pandemic, a lot of universities lost a lot of funding. Scholarships are going to be minimal at best. Please go to the financial aid pages of these colleges and READ the cost of attendance.
Then ask your parents what their budget would be for you to attend a university, per year. This should have been done before you applied to the universities. Most students have to be funded by the Bank of Mom and Dad. There are no full rides.
Arizona State University is still accepting applications and University of Alabama may be accepting applications and both have good financial aid packages. Look at their websites for admissions deadlines but please READ the cost of attendance.

Ok, I got it… thank you! I am not a resident of California so I understand not getting scholarships to UCLA, I was just curious about A&M’s lack of aid( that’s where I was leaning towards attending) because I thought I would be qualified enough. But, thank you for clarifying about California!
Are you familiar with the scholarships available at A&M? Did you submit supplemental info for the ones that require it?

TAMU does not offer many scholarships as they have a large number of top students. The cost is very reasonable for a very good school. If that’s your best financial offer and it’s affordable, go there. Most have a fantastic experience.

I was sure I did… the ones that were available on apply texas.
oh ok that makes me feel much better! Thank you!
How does your cost of attendance for TAMU compare to Baylor and St. Mary’s with scholarships?
A&M is $32,000/year while Baylor is $40,000/year
Your stats are impressive, but there are LITERALLY thousands of students applying to A&M with as good or better stats than you. There is no incentive for A&M to offer scholarships to every high-stats student who applies.
Many lower-ranked, state flagships use scholarships to entice “top” applicants to choose their school, but A&M attracts all the highly qualified students it can handle.

Congratulations on impressive stats and acceptance to topnotch universities.
If you’re nationally-ranked in your sport, would you consider playing it at the D3 level? It might still be time to reach to coaches about it and
What can your parents afford out of pocket (from current income and savings), each year, for your college costs?
At TAMU were you admitted to the major you wanted?
If 32K is too expensive for your family, not all is lost: Time to send a quick app to University of Arizona and to University of New Mexico.

How will a D3 school help this student. They don’t give athletic scholarships…maybe merit aid…if they haven’t missed the application deadlines!
Many D3 schools provide scholarships. Just not for athletics.
However, athletes do get preferential treatment for admission and if their stats are excellent, they can get an academic scholarship. In other words, the sport would be an “in” to get to the rest. (This student being a high achiever academically who is also “nationally ranked” but “not good enough for D1” would make him/her very interesting to excellent D3 college coaches). I’ve seen scholarships given to high academics/strong athletics recruits 3 months after the deadline… especially if the team was still lacking a couple recruits.
However, the more OP waits, the less the odds of a D3 team needing someone. And OP hasn’t returned.
@calc4ever : what sport?
Ok makes sense! I play tennis and was ranked as high as #8 in Texas and 125 nationally in the past year. I have applied to Carnegie Mellon( D3) and am waiting for a response. I have already been offered a place at A&M(D1) as a walk on, but I am not sure if I want to go there without scholarships. According to Carnegie Mellon’s current team and their stats I will probably fall around top 3 in their line-up
Is TAMU/32K without scholarships affordable for your family?
Didn’t Trinity offer scholarships? Or are you not interested? They have a strong tennis team (have you reached out to the coach)?
Run the NPC on Whitman: would it be affordable?
Where did you end up going? I hope everything worked for you. My son is a senior and we are going through all this and is driving me crazy!
