I just got rejected by most of universities that I applied to.

Hi, guys. I am a korean student currently living in Japan.
I have been attending an international school since 2005
and I am graduating in this June.

Since I had been thinking of going to american universities only in case I got
accepted by top schools, I applied to only top schools such as IVYs and
JHU, Stanford and WU in St.Louis and etc. (almost 14 schools)

And guess what? I got rejected by most of those schools.

Briefly introduing myself, I can speak three languages: Korean, Japanese, English.
I took SAT about 5times and my initial attempt was 1960 and my final attempt was 2120.
I took SAT2 too. Math2 800, Biology 610 Physics 630.
AP Japanese 5 AP Physics 3 and taking 4 other AP exams next month
I was a student president in my student council last year.
I have been the leader of drama club for two years. (director, scriptwriter, editor)
I have been the leader of school band. (composer, keyboard player, accompanist)
I have been volunteering at Japanese local nursing home for 4 years
( every saturday)
My college essay was on my ethnic identity (being a korean in international school
which is located in Japan)
I was awarded almost 10times in Canadian Mathematics Competition (U of Waterloo).
I have been getting all the math, physics and music highest mark awards in my school.
I had good relationships with my teacher, counsellor and other students.

Ofcourse, I was NOT expecting to get admitted by all the schools that I applied to.
However, it is just so disappointing that I got rejected by almost every
single school. And I am now thinking of going to Waseda, Tokyo or even
going back to Korea.

Plus, I also applied to McGill and my name is on the waiting list
and waitlisted for WU in St.Louis too...

It is so frustrating....

Why wouldnt I get admitted by any of those schools...........
at least 1....

Ouch! Well, you do have options in Korea or Japan, don’t you? I’m a international from Taiwan but the thing is that my Mandarin is -dismal-. It’s so chronically bad. I go the normal school system here in Taiwan, but I think I would get slaughtered in college here, which is why the U.S. is basically my only choice for undergrad.

Oh you from Taiwan? One of my best friends is from Taichung
Yeah, I still do hve options in Korea and Japan.
Maybe higher possibility in Japan (Waseda, Tokyo, Keio and etc)
My first language is Korean but since I have been taught in english
for 6 years, I find learning in english much much easier than in korean.

Plus, competition in Korea is unimaginably tough…
Like everyone gets 2400 for SAT and 120 for TOEFL
and 13 AP’s with all 5 and stuff…

Did you learn Japanese as a kid, or did you pick it up later on? If it’s the former, I’m really impressed; I’ve learned Spanish for 3 years but uh, I think I would fail on the AP Spanish test. XD Yeah, the competition in Taiwanese HS to go onto colleges here is really intense as well. I don’t know so much about competition to go to US colleges, but I do know this one guy who got into U. Chicago on a FULL SCHOLARSHIP. -dies- arrrrgh!!

I got into a few schools, and I’m moderately happy with them. I’d have to pay about 25k to get into this LAC that I like, though. I’m still waiting to hear back from a public u.; while I think I’ll get in, I don’t know how much money (if any) they’ll give. -sigh- One depressing thing about an American education is that basically, you have to pay massive amounts of $$.

So, you only considered top schools in U.S.? Or will other schools do? I mean, I’m sure that there are still a few colleges around with rolling admissions/late deadlines. I’m a bit hazy on the details of the transfer process, but I mean, it’s still a way into the college of your dreams.

The institutions on your list are reaches for even US applicants, which would make them “super reaches” because of your international status. It was perfectly OK to only apply to the ones that you and your family felt were worth the money. Your results might have been different had you applied to places that were a bit closer to being matches or safeties for US applicants with your stats. However, would you have wanted to attend any of those places?
