At the very end I accidentally put Northwestern unconsciously as I was just researching it previously and I was dozing off typing the email. I hit send and now I'm screwed. How do I respond/apologize? How badly will this affect my chances at Rice.

I sincerely apologize for the typo I have made at the end of this e-mail. Truthfully, I was researching some Universities and I unconsciously put down Northwestern University. I was careless by not checking the e-mail before sending it. I am very much interested in Rice University and am applying. I hope my aloofness will not give a bad vibe as to who I am. Once again, I am truly sorry.

Regards,

This is what Im thinking of sending… thoughts? I feel really bad about this.

It looks great. However, I would remove the 2nd to last sentence, as it can be awkward steering the conversation to what the person reading your email thinks of you.

Edit: it probably won’t make much of a difference, if any. They probably receive so many emails that they won’t remember who you are by the time your application pops up.

They will probably have received hundreds of emails in between your original one and this follow-up. Just let it be. It’s entirely possible they won’t even notice, and even more likely that they won’t care.
