I just noticed that I accidentally used a contraction in my college essay.

I used the word "didn't" and it went completely unnoticed when I proofread it. Is this the end of the world for me?

Not at all. When it fit the tone, I used contractions in my essays.

I’ve been told you should write your essays as if you were having a conversation, so I think you’re totally fine.

I kept mine fairly conversational, but I did avoid contractions. It must have sounded good, though, if it seemed completely normal when I proofread. Thanks for the help, though, this is what I wanted to hear.

Some essay books actually suggest you read out your essay to make sure it’s something you would actually say. If contractions were normal, then you’re fine.

Great advice! Everybody should remember that college essays should be written organically.

■■■■■? please

Who exactly?

Despite what your English teacher tells you, contractions are perfectly fine to use *as long as they fit the tone of what you are writing. *
