School type: Slightly competitive, can't get my rank up more because all the IB students had Honors/AP classes shoved into them throughout freshman-senior years, I was in Brazil and couldn't do that.

Awards/EC:
- Outstanding Economics Honors Student (I took econ as a junior, usually awarded to seniors as it's a senior class - teacher made an exception as I was the best econ student she ever had)

Recs: I can get some pretty outstanding recomendations, in the 1 semester I've been at my school, all my teachers pretty much love me. My econ teacher retired and said I was the best student she ever had. Awesome relationship with my counselor, too.

Now, there are a few factors to this. I did poorly on the SATs, and am still going to take the subjects as I didn't feel ready for them. I was abroad in Brazil for 4 years, so I had some transfer credits that ended up messed up but this was the best my counselor could do for me. Everything before AP US History was transferred credits, and the courses under it are what I took this year. I am going to be a senior starting in August, and this is what my curriculum is looking like so far:

Semester 1:
AP US History
AP Eng Language
AP Eng Literature
AP Environmental Sciences
IB Theory of Knowledge
AP Calculus AB
AP Psychology

**Semester 2:/b Statistics I
(Dual Enrollment) Microeconomics
AP Eng Literature
AP Environmental Sciences
AP Calculus AB
Honors Research (filler class for those who take TOK 1st semester)
AP Psychology

Now, my first semester has English and US History again because I only did one semester of Junior year since I was in Brazil until January this year, hence I need the full credit.

Now, I am going to re-take the SATs. I hope to take my scores up to at least 750-ish on each section, and I'm hoping to take the Math II/Lit/US Hist subject tests and get at least a 750-ish in each of those, too. I've been doing lots of prep over the summer and my practice test are all coming out around those scores.

My ECs and awards are not really up there because I had no chance of getting them - in the Brazilian school system there is no such thing as awards or EC opportunities, I've only been in the U.S. for high school this last junior semester and one semester of freshman year. My traveling kind of got in the way of my school curriculum, unfortunately I couldn't to much about it.

I'd like to know my chances for Business Schools, more specifically I'd like to major in International Business. I'm looking for maybe a carreer in i-banking or management involving multi-nationals, but I'm open to wherever my carreer takes me in the business world. A few schools that interest me:

U. South Carolina (apparently was rated the best int'l business program)

Georgetown (don't know how their business program works)

Columbia (for econ)

NYU

UCLA

U. of Miami

I'm not really sure where else to look for unis. Anyone have any suggestions of what kind of unis I should be looking at? Maybe some good safeties? I'm a first generation college student, and come from a pretty low income household (< 20k/year). I'm an American born citizen but my parents were naturally born Brazilian and are now naturalized Americans. I'd like my chance with the current scores and then the projected scores if you all would be so kind :D

Your second projection is VERY optimistic given the current result. As of now, rejection from all, though I am unfamiliar with stats at UM and Univ. South Carolina.

I think you are an absolute lock for the University of South Carolina---even if your SAT don't improve much at all. I was a student there in the Honors College (way back, but I do keep up with current conditions a bit). The school is ranked as "selective", but just barely with the average SAT score for admits being somewhere around 1175 mv.

Well, my projections are based on what I've been getting on practice tests from the books I bought for prepping. I screwed up last year and spent all summer going over prep books, re-reading learning material, and all that jazz. My practice tests as of late are all coming in on the 700-800 range so I don't think my projection is too far off.

If my scores happen not improve, other than USC (which I'm glad to know I might be a lock on), what kind of places should I be looking at?

try looking into Boston College

Actually I do plan on applying there and if I get in seeking the Econ/Math double major. Also applying to Boston U, which is better in my area?

I'm pretty optimistic that you'll have a good chance at all those colleges. I'd just pump your diversity, which colleges are always on the lookout for. Maybe even write your essay about it somehow. :)

how do you expect to go from 1790 to 2200?

1790 to a 2200 practicing all summer with prep and course books, as of late my scores on the mock SAT exams are around the 2200 range. I've been doing lots of writing and reading to improve vocab/writing techniques and my English teachers says they're very good.

Thanks for the opinions, I think I can leverage my diversity/studying abroad a lot in the application essay. Also wondering with the projected scores, if there's any colleges I'm overlooking for a good business program? Also, any good safeties?

BC has a good business program lol

I go to the University of South Carolina and yes the international business program is the best in the country (according to US News). But you have to apply in your sophmore year and it is very difficult to get in (only 50-60 people per year).

Well, I would enter by applying to the business school as undergrad, choose international business as my intended major, and then apply sophomore year to see if I can get in? How's campus life and all that jazz over there? It seems like a really great place =)

Bumpage because we all know the second page gets no attention :D

MEGABUMP! Gonna try it one more time, we all know nobody looks at the second page ;]

if your SAT's really do improve that much, I would consider applying to wharton at upenn

make sure you talk a lot about brazil in your essays/interviews

UPenn Wharton once upon a time was my first choice, specifically the Huntsman program because I had spent so much time abroad and had such a good cultural context for Brazil (Portuguese is one of their newest offered languages in the program). But after I bombed the SATs I wasn't sure. Would it really be worthwhile to apply to UPenn Wharton if I'm able to get my SATs up that much? It's pretty much my dream school, as I'm sure it is for any other undergrad b-school student.

if you improve your scores by that much it's a slight reach but you should still apply... make sure you talk about your interest for Huntsman and how that relates to your experience in brazil

but once again, it all revolves around your SAT's, so keep practicing and prove everyone wrong (I can tell you from experience, it is possible to improve that much... about a year ago I took a practice SAT test and got a 590 on the math... after months of prep I took the real SAT [last may] and I ended up with a 750 Math :) )

Well I've been getting in the 700-800 range on my practice SAT tests in the blue books and my other prep books, so I'm thinking maybe I can pull it off. The only thing that has always worried me (for any college, even) is that when I get to the "EC/Activities" section I won't have much to fill in. I hope they'll understand that in Brazil we don't have those opportunities, and then I just feel so empty compared to all these other applicants with Harvard SSP, contest winners, boy scouts, the whole nine yards.

I'll see how my scores end up and try for UPenn Wharton/Huntsman I guess =) I'd be really happy if I got in. I just had so many people tell me it was straight up REJECT at Wharton that I got unmotivated. All I really have to show for EC is my outstanding econ student award, but then again, it's what I love doing - so even though I was only in school last semester last year I got it.

Thanks for all the great opinions, if I could get a few more chances for places such as Wharton/top colleges I'd appreciate it =) I don't know how much admissions officers take context into consideration.

Last bump of all. Anyone else have any opinions for safeties, or some good reaches? Thanks =)

ud get into UM
