I know what I want to study... but where?

I want to study sociology and/or anthropology do a pre-med track.
Academic info:
-SAT 2200
-Notable courses: AP Lit, AP Calc AB, AP Chem, AP Physics C (both)
-GPA 3.70 unweighted

College preferences: small-medium school with a campus in or near a city.

and do* a pre-med track.

If you reveal your state and class rank others will pop in with some suggestions. It would also be nice to know what you can afford to pay. Also try the College Match feature on this site. It was pretty accurate for my son. You can also ask it to select schools that would likely give you merit aid.

You can browse these Newsweek articles for ideas:

“The 25 Most Desirable Suburban Schools”

“The 25 Most Desirable Urban Schools”

LACs in cities include: Macalester, Vassar, Reed, Rhodes, Colorado College, Bates
LACS in the suburbs of cities include: Swarthmore, Haverford, Pomona, Goucher
LAC-like in/near a city: Rice

There are more but these are the ones that leap to mind. They all will provide fine preparation for a pre-med (although Colorado College’s block system may not work well for you.) There are many more LACs within a hours drive of a city - but that may be too far for you (Bowdoin, Oberlin, Grinnell, Carleton, etc…)

All provide anthropology and sociology and decent pre-med advising. (Amherst’s on-line guide for pre-meds is the Gold Standard here, by the way. Google it.) Make sure you can afford wherever you end up without going into debt. Med school is wickedly expensive (one of the many things that needs reforming in our health care system.)

Colleges with distinct anthropology departments are typically stronger in anthropology than colleges at which sociology and anthropology are combined.

You can browse this online list for schools that have been recognized as having opportunities that have furthered the goals of their pre-med students: “The Experts’ Choice: Colleges with Great Pre-med Programs.”

Washington University is a smaller university with strong academics and is located just outside of St Louis. Good pre-med program and you could major in anthropology.

^ WUStL would be a reach (for any student but particularly with the OP’s GPA).

If med school doesn’t happen, would u still choose to graduate w a sociology or anthropology degree?

I’m not sure how much you can afford. These are matches that offer pre-med & sociology/anthropology:

-John Hopkins
-Trinity College-Hartford
-Carnegie Mellon
-Lafayette Colleges
