I know the SATs are pretty crap. But, how much will it take my app down by? I don't test well :(

Just saw the “What are my chances?” thread…My bad.

…bump…

Your standardized test scores will hurt your chances at over half the schools on your list, and I’m taking into consideration that you may raise it by 70 points again. I would eliminate most of the Ivy League/Ivy equivalent schools: Williams, Brown, Columbia, Princeton, Swarthmore, and Chicago. That still leaves you the following reach schools: Georgetown, UCB, Michigan, NYU, JHU, W and M, and Tufts. Many may argue that GWU and BU are reach schools for you as well. I would try to get the list down to 10 or 12 schools by being more realistic with your chances at the top-tier schools on your list. You have some interesting ECs but they will not offset an SAT score that is near the bottom of the applicant pool at these very selective schools. You are simply too top-heavy at the moment.
I would also suggest lopping off the sports ECs where you only participated for 1 year.

Good luck.

I was afraid of that. How do you think I could strengthen my app and try to off-set the SAT Scores? And should I just limit it to the schools you classified as reaches? Where exactly do my ECs stand?

Thanks for your help, I started to think nobody was going to reply.

You might want to copy and paste your original post in the “What are my chances” forum, if you haven’t done so yet. Your ECs are good but, as I said, will not outweigh test scores and GPA (or rank, in your instance) that isn’t on par with other international applicants applying to the same schools. You are in the most competitive applicant pool of all.

maverick2016,

If and when you apply to UC Berkeley you should also apply to one or two of the other UC campuses. It is the exact same application. You simply check off the other campuses that you want the application to be sent to and pay $60.00 for each additional UC school. My suggestion, based on your stats and resume, would be to definitely apply to UC Irvine. This is a very nice UC campus located in Irvine California (CA), on the border of Newport Beach in the area of “our” (my home) state known as Southern CA. Irvine is a very safe and culturally diverse city, with many good ethnic (including Asian and Indian!) restaurants, shopping, entertainment, beaches, great airport, etc., all in very close proximity. Your SAT score is currently close to being within range for UC Irvine. The other UC campus you might want to consider applying to is UC San Diego. Once again, good luck!

You might also get more school-specific feedback by posting in designated forums. I.E. the Williams forums, the Chicago forum, and so on.

How good is Irvine for International Relations? I haven’t heard much about it.
