I lost all confidence

I don't know what to say exactly, I just feel so down about this entire procedure and feel like I'm not gonna make it in anywhere. I know I'm just paranoid, but I can't help the feeling. Schools that I'm applying to are:

UCLA
UC Irvine
UC Davis
UCSD
Stanford (heh)
University of Washington
University of Austin Texas
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign

I have a so-so GPA of 3.6 unweighted, and 1710 SAT score.. I'm an international, and here lies my biggest fear. I haven't taken the TOEFL exam, nor do I plan to. I've seen a lot of universities asking for it and solely because of that reason I am really afraid that my applications won't be considered. I am studying in the IB, so my high school education was entirely in English starting from freshman year. I thought that counted as a proof to English proficiency but apparently it doesn't, or maybe it does, I don't know. I've taken the SATs twice so far, and will retake in December.

470 and 540 from Critical Reading and 540 and 490 from Writing. I don't think these results are good at all and they might think I can't talk English, but I'm more fluent at it than I am in my native language. It's not that I can't speak it (I have good grammar and everything), I'm just not a good test taker in English. My math is 700 which is pretty good I suppose.

So what do I do? Do I REALLY have to take the TOEFL? I don't know if I'm over-thinking this, but well, I'm at a loss. Help me people! :))

I would take it. I mean, if people are asking for it-- better safe than sorry.

Forgot to ask, am I too late with it? Deadline for all applications is next Saturday, and I can’t take TOEFL earlier than 2 weeks. Not that I want to take it… financial reasons.

You need to check the rules for each of the schools you are applying to. Certainly your verbal and writing scores are extremely low for the caliber of school you are applying to and taking the TOEFL confirms that English is not your mother tongue. (It might be the language you are most comfortable in, but your scores will not be acceptable to most (if not all) of the schools on your current list. Check the Common Data Set, Section C for each of these schools to see how you compare to admitted students.)

I assume you have safety schools in the country where you are studying right? Because none of these schools is a safety or even a match - all reaches.

I am not applying to school anywhere except the US. What do you suggest I do? I haven’t had time to study for my last SAT exam which will be in 1 week. I checked the SAT score ranges for each of the schools and for most of them, I am around 20-40% range. It is not too bad I suppose. Apparently they are all reaches but I’m not hopeless for any except for Stanford, but I want to try that one out just for the sake of it. Or am I hopeless actually? What do I do at this point.? :)

I wouldn’t say Illinois is a reach, maybe a high match though. Also definitely take your TOEFL exam. Illinois’ deadline is in January so you have time for that. The UC’s and UW, well the deadline is this week, so you should probably contact the college’s and see if you can work something out. Not sure about Texas. You are not hopeless. See if the colleges will accept your TOEFL after the deadline, if not at least you have Illinois to fall back on and they have a 68% acceptance rate, so your chances are higher  Good luck!

If the TOEFL is required, and you don’t take it, the college won’t ever look at your application.

If you absolutely do not want to take it, you need to apply to places that don’t require it.

It really is that simple.

Do you absolutely have to start college next fall? Why not plan a gap year to perfect your English a bit more, take the TOEFL, and rework your college list?

If you can’t afford to take the Toefl test, then how the HECK are you going to afford to pay for those schools as an international? They won’t give you aid.

Hey, you need to take the TOEFL. This is necessary for most universities (in your case, ALL your college choices). The need is only waived when you have a high Critical Reading score in the SAT.

Where are you from anyway?
