Hey, everyone! Sorry for long post~~ I love Columbia University and I’ve been striving for that since 8th grade (I’m currently a Junior in high school). I’m not gifted like many of my peers who do not need to try and still obtain straight A’s. I’m averaged, but I try. Since 9th grade and up to the start of Junior year, I have a 4.0 GPA with all honors courses. However, during my Junior year (this year) I’ve slipped. I took it up a notch and went for 3 AP classes (Bio, APUSH, and English Comp). So far, I believe that my GPA is 3.6 or 3.5. I really do not know because I have four B’s in AP classes and the rest are As/A-s.
Here are a few things to consider about before I get negative comments:
My class size is roughly 120 people (I rank 15). Varsity Track. Class VP. I play the guitar, but not for my band class. Gone to NYLF, and currently applying to BOA Student Leaders. Roughly 130 hours of Community Service (80 for the environment through AMC outdoors and the rest for the elderly. Dish washer for a busy restaurant (money doesn’t grow on trees!!!)
Do you have any advice on what I could do to improve my Resume?
i assume you lvie somewhere in the five boroughs?
I think one of the most important things you cAN do now is to keep your grades up, duh, do well on teh APs, and do research. This would entail you applying through a school program or independently seeking one out. I know Queens College has a STEM lab thing each spring which transforms into a resarhc program, but I think the deadline has passed. DOnt worry, there are plenty of research opportunities, as long as you are willing to look for them and sacrifice your summer (which you should, lol).
Unless your not a science person at all.
In which case Id say demonstrate your passion/interest in some way. Join a well-known outreach organization, a singing competition, whatever you want. But when application time comes, and trust me, it’ll come alot faster than you think, you want to be sure to convey yourself as a very driven person outside of class and have parallel ECs. That is all, you can probably figure out the rest.
Also ---->>>> SATS very very important, duh, aim for 2200 I guess (im so sad now thtat i dindt study and now im stuck with a 2100)
Get your class rank up, I think Columbia is around 96% of acceptances in the top 10%
^wait what???
are you saying that if a person is in the 10% of his/her class then he/she has a 96% chance of getting in??
that sounds waaaaay too good to be true… sources if you have them please
No, I live four hours away. I think I have better chances at NYU than Columbia. What were you involved in when you were in high school? I am studying for the SAT but I’m not taking any classes.
No I mean 96% of the acceptated class is in the top decile.
haha right… your choice of words was a bit confusing and I jumped to conclusions only cuz i really want to believe I have a chance
