I love Reed but my mom is unsettled.

I have been to the Reed campus and I think it is truly beautiful. The only issue is my mom thinks that it is a weed ridden slutty summer camp. Now, I am a simple man. I'm a bit quirky and very liberal in my politics but not very liberal when it comes to illegal behavior. I don't mess around with drugs and alcohol at all and I'm not planning on getting into that scene. I think that by the time I'm a senior I will have a good enough SAT and GPA to get in but would I fit in?

No.

10char

It is like summer camp.
They play capture the flag and have glo opera.
However it is like summer camp with a ton of homework.
Tell your mom about the theme dorms, including sub free.

Communism, atheism, and free love ;)

That^^^^ was Olde Reed.

The “new” spoof motto is “Capitalism, Avarice, Free Beer.”

No, students still say Atheism, Communism, Free Love. And with far less irony than Reed Magazine would have the old biddies believe.

In any case, if you’re “not very liberal when it comes to illegal behavior” and uncritically absorb your mother’s opinions on what constitutes “slutty” conduct and how objectionable it is… then no, Reed is not for you. Indeed, a lot of Reedies would object to the description of Reed as a “weed ridden slutty summer camp” because of how ignorant and judgemental it sounds, not because it’s factually incorrect.

Meh, I would say that a lot of Reedies don’t arrive at Reed as “liberal when it comes to illegal behavior” as they end up becoming. OP is at most a junior in high school. Even in a year, a lot can change. I wouldn’t definitively say that Reed isn’t for you. I would however visit at some point when students are around (if you haven’t already) and be certain to get a good feel for the school to see if you could be comfortable in that type of environment.

“my mom thinks that it is a weed ridden slutty summer camp”

NO. THAT’S BARD.

She’s confused!

Reed is strongest in the sciences especially physics and biology but is not all science like Harvey Mudd.

OP: 1) Why does your user name refer to two UC schools if you are interested in an LAC? 2) Your previous posts indicate interest in athletic recruitment, whereas Reed has no intercollegiate athletics. These two points have deterred me from responding. I am a parent of an accepted Reed student and could give some helpful feedback if I knew you were genuinely interested in Reed.

Agnosticism, socialism, safe sex.

Olde Reede is dead.

While Reed’s athletic program isn’t on the same level as most colleges, to say that they don’t have any intercollegiate athletics at all isn’t really true. Reed has men and women’s soccer, rugby, ultimate frisbee, and basketball (they might just have a men’s team this year) teams that play games against other similar sized colleges in the area. They obviously don’t recruit athletes or anything and teams will usually just practice 2-3 times a week but Reed definitely has sports teams. Most of the teams form a pretty great community within Reed and are a pretty fun thing to do if you’re interested in sports and still want to do something competitive while at reed.

by poster Blakey (on 9/17/12) has a visit description that seems to be written from the point of view of a conservative southern California parent.

I would say it’s a positive account of Reed.
