I'm a sophomore at The University of Southern Mississippi with a 2.2 GPA (which I am NOT proud of). I have had depression since my freshman year of high school due to family life and have not made good grades in years. However, I am above average intelligence and could make straight A's if I were to apply myself (I made straight B's last semester without trying, except one class that I failed due to missing the final).

I want to transfer to another school with more prestige, but I don't believe that anyone will accept me, much less give me scholarships so that I can actually afford to go to one of these schools.

I feel as if I have screwed up my entire future. Is there any hope for me? If I were to make straight A's this semester, would a school like USC, UCLA, or FSU accept me for the Fall, or even for Spring of next year? Scholarship possibilities? Any tips on motivating myself? I want to turn my life around, but I just feel so depressed, as if there isn't any hope for me. I've just started therapy, but so far I've only been to an intro session, so I don't know how much it is going to help me. I've spent hours crying about this, angry at myself for digging myself into this hole. I know it's all my fault, but I don't know how to change my life.

well I dont know much about transfer students so cant really help you out much but sure if you can get straight A’s then that ought to help a lot in your admission process :D

i don’t know much about transfer admissions either, but i think if you make straight A’s for the next semester/year you could definitely transfer to a great school. :)

Schools like USC, UCLA, and FSU generally accept transfer students with a 3.5+ gpa. All of those schools are top 50 universities (if I’m not mistaken). Here’s some possibilities:

1.) You can finish your degree out at USM and raise your GPA to a 3.0 by graduation. Then go to one of those grad schools that you wouldn’t have gotten into before.
2.) Transfer to a community college for your junior year and retake the class’ you got a C or lower in. Then transfer to one of the above mentioned schools from there.
3.) Apply to 6-8 schools for this upcoming fall just like a high school student would. Include reach schools (USC, UCLA, FSU), match (other random state colleges), and safety’s (USM or community colleges) and see what happens.

Don’t worry, you haven’t screwed your life over.

Okay, you definitely have a chance at FSU if you can get mostly A’s this semester. Honestly there are many people like you that feel hopeless because of problems outside and within college. All you have to do is think positive about what you have, be grateful.

There are many smart people that end up ruining there lives because of bad decisions they make. Trust me, the suicidal rate at Harvard and MIT is one of the highest in the U.S.

UCLA might be tough for you, but FSU you definitely have a chance. I know many students that earned less than 3.0 GPA that gained admission into FSU after getting rejected from UF. Not to mention, the campus at FSU is superb… much better than UF, and probably even better than USC.

If there is any way to make up your failed courses, if there are things like grade forgiveness, that would definitely help.

When you think about it, why would you slack off if it just makes things worse. Get into the Habit of studying efficiently, try and connect more with the people at your university or in the area you reside in, it will make you feel better. just remember there are many like you, but your future depends on how you respond to the depressing moments in your life.
