Found this note “Ursinus will continue to accept applications after February 1 on a space-available basis.” on the admissions page of Ursinus College, one of the CTCL.ORG Schools.
It is a lovely LAC in the Philadelphia Suburbs. They come close to meeting full financial need, and it might work financially for you. I suggest calling the admissions office, explain your situation, and ask to speak to an admissions rep. One of my Ds applied several years back, and a family friend who recently graduated had a great experience at Ursinus.
I urge you too try calling Ursinus again,. We always found tbe admissions personnel to be very helpful and friendly, just guessing it was a phone snafu, and they just accidentally dropped your call
called back and they said do it ASAP but yes. i ran the NPC and it would cost me about 13k a year after my federal loan. not sure if that’s doable, but i think its worth trying.
This is my email to the dean of YSU’s honors college as follows:
"Dear Dean Cossentino,
Due to family circumstances, I need to apply to new colleges. I was highly recommended Youngstown State University and its honors program by some lovely people for my intended major in journalism. I love the discussion-based classes and emphasis on service and leadership that the honors college exemplifies. I have taken AP English and Composition, AP Literature and Composition, AP Art History, and AP Psychology as well as many other honors classes during my time in high school, and I feel like I’d fit right in with the tight-knit community YSU Honors offers. The honors housing and retreats really seem to foster teamwork within the honors college and is something I would love to participate in. I know the deadline has passed, but is it possible for me to apply for honors college admission? I would be happy to attach further credentials, such as a transcript or example of my work, for your consideration. Thank you for your consideration and time.
Since your stats would put you in the top 25% for Ursinus students, they would likely try to offer you as much need based aid as they can,. You are the type of student, good stats, academically motivated, etc. thay wouldi love to enroll. Our family friend who attended Ursinus was a high stats student, National Merit Finalust, etc. She loved her time there and felt challenged academically.
Of course, there is no guarantee the financial aid package will be high enough, but worth a shot at this point, I think. Stay positive! Posters have given you many good options that could work.
I don’t have any advice but I’m rooting for you. You’re handling this so well and you seem like someone who will thrive and do well in your college journey wherever you land. It’s great how many folks are helping and great how you’re taking action and being practical and positive.
plan is going as follows:
-emailed YSU. have app filled out and ready to go once i get an answer.
-have app for Ursinus filled out and ready to go. someone was kind enough to offer to look over my common app essay, so waiting on their feedback before i send it.
-calling penn state sometime this week. once we call, i will alter the fafsa and make necessary changes.
-researching the other schools, including state schools. carlow is in the city which i love but the female to male ratio is 6:1. i’m female but not interested in having such a small pool of diversity, and it would cost over 10k a year after WS and federal loan. scratching that one off.
options seem to be as follows:
YSU
Ursinus
Penn state 2+2 program
pitt-bradford and then pitt-main
CC and transfer
the heavens perform a miracle and i get anything but a denial at CMU (lol)
updates: YSU is letting me apply to the honors college. also submitted an app to washington college in maryland because the application was free and hey, why not. planning to submit to ursinus tonight.
@mommdc i got 14k from Duquesne plus a 4k housing award but they’re so expensive my net cost all said and done was still around 20k.
Geneva isn’t the right place for someone who’s not religious and even hesitated about John Carroll (it has a religious identity but Geneva considers the Bible the full, inerrant word of God and that it should guide everything students do, weekly is required, and no one can be employed who isn’t a professing Christian.)
I read all previous posts in this thread and feel your stress across the internet. It sounds like you could benefit from living away from home, like many, or most, young people. I’m a little bit confused by your desire for a city environment - or at least your consideration of schools like Susquehanna. While it has a great approach to learning, it’s about as removed from a city as you’ll find. Students who go there love it, but they all live on campus for four years, and Selinsgrove is kind of depressing. My twin daughters both were offered Presidential scholarships, but they aren’t likely to attend.
Ursinus is a lot closer to Philly (but not around the corner), and it’s in the top 3 for each of them. They both qualified for the automatic Gateway scholarship, but your situation is a bit different - you’re looking for an exception of a late application and have a large financial need.
One thing I wouldn’t recommend is to plan on transferring before you even start. Instead I would take a deep breath, think about what’s truly important to you, and then move ahead with two or three options likely to fill the majority of your needs without saddling you with too much debt. Good luck on your quest!
thanks for your comments! im probably not gonna do susquehanna since its so rural, i honestly might as well transfer within the pitt-bradford system at this point. i think ursinus is worth a shot and so are some other schools. i definitely dont want to plan on transferring before i start and i hope to love whatever school i pick for 4 years, but i still would like to have the option and be prepared/know exactly what i need to do to make that happen if it becomes necessary.
