So I had this crappy Sony Ericsson phone for like 3 yrs, I felt like it's time for me to get a new phone. We currently have a family plan in T-mobile, is there anyway that I can get a discounted new phone through T-mobile without stopping the family plan and paying extra?

Get a T-mobile go-phone and just stick your SIM in it. You can also an ATT go-phone, but I believe you have to unlock it beforehand. You can also try craigslist.

T-Mobile doesn’t do that “qualify for upgrade pricing” after your contract is up? My AT&T family plan lets us upgrade our phones for “new contract pricing” every 2 years. I am about to use mine to get an iPhone for the $199 price. I’m on a family plan with shared minutes.

Buy a phone off ebay - just type in “T-Mobile phones” and you’ll get plenty of results. Some people sell brand new phones for cheap.

Shouldn’t you be able to upgrade? If so, just upgrade and pay the 2 year price for any phone you want.

I have T-Mobile, too, and you can buy basically any phone that uses a SIM card on eBay and just switch the SIM. I switch the SIMs from my brother’s phone to his old phone all the time because he never charges it. Takes like 15 seconds. Then when your contract is over you can re-up and get all the fun discounts.
