I need advice for my community college classes!

Thank you for taking the time to read this, I appreciate it greatly.

So, I recently graduated high school and will start community college soon. I am going to take a 5 week session of Math 083 - Intermediary Algebra.

Then, in fall I will take

  • College Algebra
  • English 101 Hon
  • CSIT 111 - Logic and OO Design
  • Philosophy 101
  • ACDV (required class by the college)

and now this is where I am confused. I want to major in computer science and also major in physics; however, I am very far behind in math and I am aware of that but these majors are the only that interest me. I also want to put in Chem 107 because one, Computer science requires a biological and physical sciences and if i am serious about physics, i will have to take chem, so why not take it now. Basically, my question is will i have too much on plate if i add the chem class plus lab? or take it another semester. That will be 6 classes and 1 lab and I believe that will be 17 credits.

Also I wanted to reach Calc 1 by the end of my spring semester and transfer to University of Maryland - College Park but i don’t know if that is the best idea. Should I complete my two years and then transfer or how would you go about it?

I apologize for any inconveniences

17 units a semester is normal and doable for some students, but would be too much for others.

Personally, I believe that with good time management skills, the schedule you listed above would be manageable, barring factors such as a full-time job.

However, the person in the best position to make that decision will be you, particularly after the first week of the semester, as your professors will have gone over the syllabi and what would be expected of you for the classes.

Regarding whether or not you should take one or two years at community college, I would advise you to take two years in order to finish your lower division prerequisites and general education requirements, especially if you intend to double major.

I would also advise you to make a list of the general education requirements, the courses required for the computer science major, and the courses required for the physics major. Then, see how your semesters would look like.

Have you talked to an academic counselor or advisor yet? If not, make an appointment as soon as you can.
