So I need advice! I transferred to George Washington University in DC this Fall because I figured it would be best for my degree in Political Science. However, after thinking about what I wish to do, I think I wish to transfer back to my home city. I want to pursue public office in my home city and I feel like if I go to a university there, I will be able to network better, get involved with the community, etc. However, I am not sure how good the programs are at the university I am considering. I am currently considering Temple University, although I will also apply to UPenn. I need advice, does this seem logical? I plan to double major in Political Science and Economics.

I think the most important thing for you to do is get your degree and stop hopping around. Get the piece of paper and then let you life begin. Your life will be determined by the type of worker, leader and/or entrepreneur you are. I’m not saying your plan isn’t a good one but what happened to the plan that brought you to GW or the plan you had prior to transferring to GW? And now you have a new plan?

You asked for advice … that is mine. Good luck!!

GW is not what I thought it would be. For the cost of attendance, it is not ranked high at all in political science. Furthermore, this Fall they changed their econ requirements so if I wished to do econ I would need to stay an extra year, which is just not worth it when the pros and cons are compared. I thought GW was near Gtown standards…but I was quite wrong. Further, graduating from here and returning to Philadelphia will put be at a disadvantage against students who were able to intern at government agencies in Philadelphia. I thought a GW degree would be more beneficial than, say, a Temple degree, however cost/benefit makes it not seem worth it.

Temple does have a decent reputation in Philadelphia, but jobs for the grads are hard to come by in this economy. It certainly isn’t in the same league as Penn by any stretch of the imagination. If you already have connections in Philadelphia and know you have a job after graduation, go for Temple. Otherwise, stay at GW.

GW is just as good as Gtown and probably Hopkins for Political Science. And significantly better than Temple. GW will give you plenty of networking ability, since it’s right in the heart of D.C. and many people go there for poli sci. I would stay there rather than going to Temple any day.

If you are instate for Temple, I would highly recommend that you transfer back to Temple vs. paying exorbitant tuition at GW. Save your money. networking in Philly will be much easier with 140,000 Temple grads in the Philadelphia metro area. People outside Philly may scoff at Temple, but in Philly it is well regarded.

i don’t mean to be rude, but i think the problem is with you, not the school. you’ve just transferred in 45 days ago. get an internship. meet some people. make some friends. also, what ranking are you talking about? gw is tied with georgetown, hopkins, and vanderbilt if you’re looking at us news poly sci, which is kinda worthless anyway.

transferring schools 3 times is a major red flag for any employer. it screams “i’m not stable”.
