I need help deciding between Cornell, Washington University in St. Louis and UMich

Hey everyone,

I have been accepted to WashU, Cornell and UMich and I'm having a hard time trying to decide which one to choose. They are all equally great schools which makes this decision process even harder...I am interested in both art and neuroscience. I am just wondering what your opinions are on each place and which one you think is the best school to choose from.

I was torn between WashU and Cornell for a while. Honestly, both will give you an equally good education, but I chose Cornell due to its diversity. I know it’s a bit of a cliche in university slogans, but Cornell really does have the most diverse undergraduate student body I could imagine. There really is a place for every type of person here. Really. Also, students here, I feel, are far more active than at WashU. There are both thriving Greek and underground/alternative party scenes, there are a vast number of student organizations which stay very, very active, and students are academically ambitious and diverse in their disciplines (hailing from 7 different colleges, ranging from hotel management to architecture; it’s really phenomenal). I found the general consensus among WashU students to be that their campus tends to be much more mellow. It’s also much smaller and their collegetown (“the loop”) is far less interesting - my opinion only, of course. And on a last note, WashU tends to have a slightly more conservative student body (politically ‘moderate,’ I guess you could say) while I feel that Cornell is more actively and outspokenly liberal, though not by any means extreme. I encourage you to visit both campuses, and, more importantly, to ask for opinions on campus life from resident students (again, I want to stress that campus life should probably determine which school you choose; both are basically equal academically…plus, as an undergraduate, the school you choose doesn’t matter all THAT much - don’t stress). Hope I helped!

cornell has one of the best art/architecture schools. what else are you interested in/what criteria are important to you? i live(d) in st louis so i might be of help…

I’m interested in studying both art and neuroscience and possibly creating an interdisciplinary study combining the two. I guess my one fear about Cornell is that I will be thrown into the deep end and it is either sink or swim. I don’t know if that is true but for some reason I keep getting vibes that I wouldn’t be as academically supported as I would be in the other schools. WashU is great, I just hope that the social scene is good. i know cornell has a pretty good social scene and Umich’s is unbeatable. UMich for me might be a little too big, considering I’m going to a highschool that has 80 kids per grade. I love WashU, but I feel like everyone is routing for Cornell. I feel so lucky to have there options, but I just wish I didn’t have to choose. I still have sometime to decide, but it is soon becoming crunch time.
