Hi,

I'm a citizen of Norway, so I'm within the EEA, but fall outside the boundaries of Home/EU price. I recognise that that causes me to be seen as an international student.

This places me in a category where I have to pay a very high fee, at least for the top universities like Oxford and Cambridge, where the tuition fees are upwards of 25,000 pounds.

So, I'm in need of a little help now. I'm interested in a prestigious university within mechanical engineering.
The Norwegian government gives me support up to 13 thousand per year, but as long as it's present on the following list I receive support for 20 thousand p.a. for tuition. (The differing 7000 pounds are a grant, so I don't mind it being towards the upper limit)

Lancaster University
Royal College of Art
University of Bath
University of Bristol
University of Cambridge
University of Durham
University of Edinburgh
University of Essex
University of Leeds
University of Manchester
University of Oxford
University of Sheffield
University of Southampton
University of St. Andrews
University of Warwick
University of York
UoL Courtauld Institute of Art
UoL Imperial College of Science,Technology and Medicine
UoL London School of Oriental and African Studies
UoL London School of Economics and Political Science
UoL Queen Mary
UoL University College London

So, if anyone with some experience with engineering courses could tell me which of these universities are worth looking into in terms of having good engineering courses within the price limit, as well as having a nice campus and good facilities.

Also, are you aware of any universities where I could get a scholarship? I'm taking the IB now, and expect to graduate with 42+ points.

Imperial college is a famous specialist science and engineering school. However, I doubt it will be any more affordable than oxbridge. If anything, it will be more expensive due to cost of living in London.

To save money choose somewhere in the north like Manchester and Durham.

Thanks for your response. I’ve looked at ICL as an option, but it’ll cost me 25 thousand, leaving me with 5 thousand that I can’t cover, and that’s–while very unfortunate–simply too expensive.

Without knowing anything about their engineering departments I can tell you that Manchester, Lancaster, Durham, Sheffield, York and Leeds are going to be the cheapest, due to a lower cost of living in the north of England. So I would start by looking these ones up in engineering league tables.

Also Google “the student room” for a UK version of this board.

Sent from my GT-S5830i using CC

I agree with cupcake, living in the North of England is a lot cheaper than the south (London)

What you need to do is go on UCAS (the website where everyone that is applying for uni in the UK has to use) and look at the course offerings. Don’t just pick a uni because it’s cheaper than another one even though the course is better at the one that is a little more expensive.

Costs to study at…
University of Bath: £15,700 - £12,300
University of Bristol: £17,250 - £32,000
University of Cambridge: £13011 - £19800 (Yes Cambridge is cheaper than Bristol!)
University of Durham: (Unable to find)
University of Edinburgh: £13300 - £17500
University of Essex: (Doesn’t do the course according to UCAS)
University of Leeds: £12900 - £16200
Lancaster University: £12070 - £15350
University of Manchester: £16500
University of Oxford: (Not been posted yet)
University of Sheffield: £16640
University of Southampton: £13300
University of St. Andrews: (You don’t apply through UCAS so you need to research)
University of Warwick: £18390
University of York: (Doesn’t have the course)

And I couldn’t find anything for University College of London.

All of the prices may increase/decrease. Many of these universities can offer small scholarships to international students.

While I recommend both Imperial and University College London, on that budget London is going to be a little too expensive for you. For engineering, I’d say Manchester and Southampton are pretty good, and also within your budget. Also, look into Loughborough.
