Hello Guys, I just noticed that i have to take the SAT in 4 months. I am a 7th going to 8th grader. And ever since i was little, I wanted to get into IMSA. I studied my butt off until i was in 2nd grade. I knew long division in kindergarden. and I finished what would be Algebra 1 in second grade. But then I was swept up by astronomy and then of course, The growing game, Minecraft got me addicted to it, So i stopped studying and now i’m not ahead anymore. (I took algebra 1 in 7th grade and got A+) And now i am in a predicament as now i have to take the sat in december. I have great grades at school i get A+ in math A in everything else, but terrible grades in PE and Art. I do a broad variety of things. I am ok at the violin. I went to state in swimming (got 8th). I do school sports, Newspaper, pottery, math olympiad (i have trophies for my resume). My parents planned my life ahead. But my math skills are only good up to algebra 1 and reading to my current 7th grade level. and my jr high school, I don’t think anyone has every gotten better than university of illinois in it. So i have very little faith. Do you guys think i can study a lot and maybe learn all the math skills and reading and science skills and get in? I plan to study 2 hours every day. maybe more. And does art and pe skills matter on your report card that is sent to IMSA? Im just so nervous because if my resume is denied that is my life gone. Any recommendations on what to do to get in? My parents have painted this impossible wall over IMSA. They say you have to get 1600 on sat have 4.0 GPA and win lots of trophies. Is that true, do i have to be the perfect student. And can i have some insight on what the life inside IMSA is? I know my grammar is terrible, its just im nervous for wahts to come.

No problem with the math part of the SAT if you are willing to work hard. My son got a 770 on the math part of the “old” SAT (2400 scale test), which is equivalent to a 780 or 790 on the current SAT, when he was just starting the 7th grade and had never taken any formal classes. But, he had studied math independently and had worked through Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 and most of precalculus by that time. SAT math is pretty simple - use the study guides, get some solid exposure to geometry though Khan Academy or books, and you should be fine.
And no, you don’t have to get a 1600, not even close! There are only a handful of kids under about 14 who have ever gotten a perfect on the SAT (although the recent revision has made the SAT easier, so this may become more common in the future). Even getting over the equivalent of about a 1500 is extremely rare. The talent search organizations like Johns Hopkins CTY and Duke TIP used to publish some information and will also answer questions, and it’s like fewer than 50 or 100 7th graders nationwide who score those sorts of numbers, so definitely don’t stress about needing a perfect SAT.
The SAT can be “beat” by a smart 7th or 8th grader. Work through the study books carefully and give it your best shot. The evidence-based reading and writing will be more difficult than the math. I’d recommend starting with the books by Erica Meltzer on grammar, reading and writing, and doing all the official practice SATs that have been released for the new test.
Best of luck!! PM if you want any more info.
The SAT or the SSAT? The SSAT is what you take to get into boarding school, SAT is for college.
