BC - I just picked up my H’s new IPad. It is charging so he will be able to play with it after work. Did you get a cover for yours? I was overwhelmed by the choices at the Apple store. The rubber one looked great, but I don’t know if I want that in my hands.

I have not heard any updates about college e-textbooks.

I think that college e-texts will take a while. I know that Apple was working hard with publishers but doing the content deals can be harder than doing the technology stuff. I didn’t get a cover for mine. I just slide it into my backpack. I’m comfortable handling the device as it is but I have big and fairly strong hands.

I think that I really want a stand, not a cover. Right now I just use my eyeglass case.

but I don’t know if they are going to produce it. If they are, it will be sometime in the summer. It’s polycarbonate and silicone I think which should provide good protection and there are openings for the ports.

Just curious – how do you cite a quote from a book on a Kindle or an iPad? D took several courses this year where the class was required to buy specific editions of books so that the citations could include page numbers, a la MLA format.

The only book that I have on my iPad is Winnie the Pooh which is cool because I’ve never read it. Looking through, I’d guess that the book is the same as the e-text version, page for page, illustration for illustration. I guess that I’d have to take a trip to Barnes and Nobles to verify at least this book.

I am reading this on my iPad. I brought down 2 extra ones to Mexico for my coworkers. With iPad I really don’t need my laptop. I made my hotel room wireless, no need for 3G.

H finally went to bed so now I can play with his new toy. It feels so light and I still have to figure out a comfortable way to hold it. Like my iphone, i see that the ipad corrects my spelling and tends to incorrectly guess what i meant to type which causes me to send many incoherent messages. Where can I find a book to load on this thing?

See if the iBooks app is there. If not, you have to download it and install it. Open the app. There’s a store app which allows you to browse. I think that it comes with Winnie-the-Pooh for free. The iBookstore is run directly from the iPad unlike a lot of the other applications (I think).

If you put free in the search bar, it will bring up free titles. The store seems pretty easy to use (I just learned how to use it in the last five minutes). I’m going to download a few titles now.

I had a discussion with a coworker on the iPad (he got one of the very early ones which now belongs to his daughter). We would both like an account hierarchy. The iPad was modeled after the iPhone and phones are personal things. The iPad will be used as a shared device in many households so it would be nice to have an account paradigm where you select the account (person in the household or guest) and then get access to your stuff. I guess that music, books, etc. could be shared.

Big flaw with iPad, there is no build in camera. What’s up with that. I could have a video chat on iPhone, but not with iPad. It is also heavy to hold up. Ok, I am not as happy as before.

I think that they ran out of time to add it. There’s a spot for it that they found in a teardown though. Expect to see it in the next version. They’re going to learn a lot about tablets with what is out there and hardware and software should be better for the next release. I am happy with the one that we have now though.

I tried reading a book on the iPad. It is easy to do, but I didn’t like holding it as the darn thing kept slipping out of my hand. I sent S1 to the Apple store and he got me a rubber type case. It is easier to hold, but I have to put it at an angle or lay down on the couch to read. A pillow in my lap works pretty good. S1 also bought me a keyboard with an iPad dock/kick stand thing. (they sure are generous when they have mom’s credit card) I haven’t opened it and might not. H thinks S1 will take my laptop to college and I will just have the iPad…don’t think so…
