I really want to go Stevens, but I have better financial aid from Arizona.

The first year retention rate at the University of Arizona is only 81% after the first year; the six year graduation rate at the University of Arizona is just 60%.

The first year retention rate at Stevens Institute of Technology is 94%: the six year graduation rate from this demanding school is 83%.

Admission standards for the two schools are quite different.

Add travel costs to your COA at Arizona.

Employers understand the difference in quality between the two schools.

You are right @AboutTheSame, my mistake, I lost track of who the OP was, somehow got the idea @publisher was. Apologies.

@sheebzus the OP: What is your intended major ?

The more I think about this, the more I think that Stevens Institute Of Technology is the wiser choice, and it certainly is career wise.

the engineering figures are a few years old in the last link

Median engineering salaries at graduation are pretty comparable. Not even considering cost of living issues, depending on location.

Again you have to compare the retention rates of engineers, the admission standards for engineers, the 4 year graduation rate for engineers.

Arizona admits athletes under different standards than Stevens admits STEM majors. Arizona has 10x as many students as Stevens.

Glad you edited your post, @Publisher. cComparing Arizona to Walmart was out of line.

@jym626 I agree with you. But see post #40 – the comment is still there. At this point only the moderators can edit it.

I never compared Arizona to Walmart. Walmart is an incredible corporation.

Nevertheless, I want to thank @jym626 for providing a very helpful post.

Oh it was Kmart you compared it to. Same smack. And, IMO Walmart is a smarmy company. But I digress…

OP: What is your intended major ?

OP: Talk to Stevens grads, you will be shocked at the annual bonus amounts received by some in their 4th & 5th year of work as computer engineers & in CS if that is your field.

My bad— your post was earlier- not edited. And it was K-mart, not Walmart. Similar insult.

@Publisher OMG. Stevens is a great school but when OP finds himself in a disastrous situation with 90k or more on debt, we have OP contact you. We never recommend 100k of debt for kids on here.

In a 2014 salary/earnings survey, Stevens Institute of Technology grads were #3 in earnings at mid-career at $124,000 per year. Ahead of them were grads of the US Naval Academy & another school (which I cannot recall). (Not sure, but I believe it was on payscale dot com).

Remember that your fellow students at Stevens Institute will be great contacts throughout your entire career.

Also, if working for the best tech employers, your annual bonus might be two to three times your salary.

@Publisher You are WAY out of line comparing U Arizona to KMart. How ridiculous. Again have OP contact you when he’s in that debt disaster of 90k-140k. He’d better pray the economy doesn’t take a downturn.

Comparing starting salaries , not mid career salaries. And the starting salaries are comparable, only the students will be saddled with a big loan to repay.

@gearmom: You are correct. Arizona is still in business. Also, I apologize if you have a student at
UA.

Regardless, Stevens is too good to pass up in this situation. If it were between Princeton & Stevens, the chorus would be screaming for Princeton at $80,000. Yet, the realities of Stevens versus Arizona are more distinct.

OP: You need to speak to folks in your future industry.

No they wouldn’t @Publisher. If it was between Princeton and Stevens, the chorus would be to pick the school that is affordable.

Well, we just have to agree to disagree. Princeton is the choice.

OP- My s’s are both engineers. They both work in Silicon valley for a well known company. Neither went to Stevens or a specifically tech school. Just FYI. 2 datapoints, FWIW. Oh- and they graduated college with no debt. And they started in different jobs. They didn’t go directly to SV after college. They both loved what they did right out of college, but both are now happy in $$$$$$$$ SV (with NO DEBT)
