Hey guys, I really have a desire to get into Columbia, I plan to major in the Arts and Science Department, and focus on Astrophysics and Astronomy. I am a Freshman in High School, I go To J.P Stevens, and I really need to know what I need to do(or Average) to get into Columbia. Thanks.

Aim for the highest possible.

I don’t see why you should dumb yourself down because it’s “enough.” Always strive for the best.

Also in terms of Extra Curricular activities and the like - focus on things that most teenagers wouldn’t do. Also, focus on things you love. How many applicants are your generic over-achievers? Leadership and volunteering at hospitals and such? You gotta go beyond - show what you love. It’s also the best way to enjoy High School! Too many students are stressing themselves out because they’re doing stuff just because it “looks good.”

Once I decided to simply “find stuff I love to do and over-excel at it”, High School became great and colleges will definitely notice it. It’s really obvious, when compared to other applications.

Ok, here’s what you should do:

Spend all four years of high school focused only on school and ECs. Do nothing for your own enjoyment. Waste no time on anything not applicable to a college application. Waste no time on friends, a social life, being interesting or a good person. Those are extraneous pursuits.
