<p>Without a doubt I believe that the most fascinating, as well as the most important issue in the public eye with regards to medical research is gene therapy. I find the mere idea of being able to discover an illness which will occur in a patient before it symptoms manifest themselves, or even before the person is born, to be absolutely astonishing. I am personally intrigued by this phenomenon, as I know in the future, after there have been further studies and we know more about the genetics of mankind, gene therapy will prove to be the single most important form of preventative medicine in the health industry. With initiatives such as the recent Human Genome Project I know that advancements in this field are coming everyday and very soon gene therapy will become a standard practice. There is certainly a great need for research in this newest, up and coming sector of health research; this much needed research can come from a variety of places, amongst them are such prestigious programs such as the BHSc at the University of Calgary. </p>
<p>There are many aspects of the BHSc Program which can contribute to the knowledge we now have on genetic therapy in an attempt to expand a brilliant new field of study. One of the best ways in which this can be done is through the research intensive Biomedical Sciences major of which I would like to be a part of. The basis of this major is to inspire the students within it to conduct research from their first year to their last. This is a huge step from many other biology courses at other universities, which follow a strict curriculum wherein the results of most of the labs students take part in are already known to the professor. The spontaneity and excitement of these research opportunities not only sets this program apart from all others but it can also lead to great strides in numerous different divisions of medical research. </p>
<p>Furthermore, the students of this research intensive degree program will have a well-formed broad based knowledge of the health sciences which will prove to be invaluable when the time comes to conduct research and develop what could be breakthroughs with respect to the topic of gene therapy.</p>
<p>Moreover, all the BHSc programs know the value of learning based on discovery and examining contemporary issues. This will lead not only to added attention to this vital field of science, but it will also make the research much more directly targeted and applicable to the areas where it is needed most.</p>
<p>It is evident that as gene therapy gains popularity on the world circuit, the demand for its research will also increase. I am certain without a shadow of a doubt that the BHSc program at the University of Calgary will play a vital role in that research. Not only does it have the capability to do so, but along with the fresh young minds of its students, it can make great strides in the world of gene therapy research and unearth the mysteries of the human body yet to be solved.</p>
