I think I messed up? Will I still be able to be in the May Commencement?

Okay so today I withdrawed from a class that I was doomed to fail. I was planning on graduating this semester, and I was going to the Commencement. Before I had withdrew, I emailed the registrar office to see if I was still eligible to attend the commencement and they said I was. Since I am going to be 4 credits short, I can either take a summer course and graduate in the summer or take a course at my transfer school in the fall and transfer the credits back to my CC and graduate in the fall. I was planning on taking the course at my transfer school this fall and transfer it back to my CC. Here is the email they sent me:

If withdrawing from the course is the best option for you, you are still eligible to attend the May commencement ceremony.

If you plan to retake the course or a new course to complete your degree requirements over the summer, you will need to complete a summer 2018 degree application and submit it to the Registrar’s Office by June 15.

You may consider another option, you may plan to take a course at your transfer school in the fall that meets this requirement and transfer the course back to graduate in the Fall of 2018. This would require you to complete a fall 2018 degree application by October 15 and submit an official transcript from your new institution by December 31, 2018 with your final grades.

The Registrar’s Office is providing you some guidelines to graduate based on the College’s policy and you should review all of your options with an advisor in the Business Advisement Center.

So now that I followed through and withdrew from the course, I am panicking they didn’t fuly understand my situation. I am only short 4 credits, if I did get screwed over my parents will be so god damn pissed at me and I will ultimately feel like a failure. I don’t know what to do. Does this make any sense? I have already filled out everything for the Spring 2018.

According to the email: even if you withdraw from the course, “you are still eligible to attend the May commencement ceremony.” However, their discussion of further options is confusing. I think the best action is to take their subsequent advice to “review all of your options with an advisor in the Business Advisement Center.”

Even if you have to delay graduation, the important thing is to focus on getting those last four credits. Don’t waste time getting sidelined by your parents’ anger or your own sense of failure, as those emotions are unproductive. Just get the job done, get the credits, and collect that diploma that you have spent so much time pursuing.

If the college does let you walk in May, the bottom line is: get the 4 credits!

@Westchestermom Lol, I had a good feeling I messed it up. I did and they said that if the Registrar said so than it must be okay. Clearly, it’s not. Ultimately, my parents anger will cause them to just pull me out of school together, as I am displaying actions that I am not able to pursue school. All because of one crappy BIO class, lol. I already withdrawed from the class so. There is only one ceremony a year, so I have to wait until next May to attend a ceremony where I have been long gone from and I am currently at my transfer school already.

I’m confused. The Registrar said that you were still eligible to attend the commencement ceremony. Then “they” (are you referring to the Business Advisement Center?) said that what the Registrar said is true? The email also said that you could take a summer course and graduate in the summer or take a course at your transfer school and transfer it in the fall, which aligns with your plans. The school would let you walk in May, so you wouldn’t have to attend a ceremony next year.

Did someone in the BAC or another administrator tell you that you actually couldn’t attend commencement?

Also, it seems bizarre to me that your parents would essentially throw away so much time and/or money because you had to withdraw from a course. Making a plan to get those credits is definitely an action showing that you are not only able to pursue school, but have the wisdom to essentially cut your losses by withdrawing before failing so that you have a high enough GPA to continue your education. You know your parents better than I do, of course. But between the fact that if anything, this was the school’s error, and the investment that’s already been put into your education, maybe you can reason with them?

The register told you you can participate in graduation, wear the cap and gown, but you WON’T graduate in May. You get them evidence that you complete the 4 credits. If you do it through this school, you need to file the form to graduate in summer 2018 or fall 2018. If you complete it at your transfer school, you need to get this school a transcript. If you do that, you will get a diploma.

What don’t you understand? It seems pretty clear to me.

I have a friend who went through graduation with the plan to complete the last class in the summer. Never happened, never graduated.

I failed physics in what was supposed to be my last quarter of college. I “walked” in commencements that May. Returned the next quarter to retake the class and earn my diploma. I was embarrassed and mad at myself at the time. In the end, it was a minor set back. Life happens. Good luck.

@OnMyWay2013 I spoke to my advisor about this and ultimately she was pretty shocked and confused by what I had to say. I told her that I had emailed the Registrar about this and she almost denied it, but told me that if the Registrar said it than it must be true. I am just getting so many conflicting results, however I do have this in written documentation. Plus, at the schools subreddit, I posted this same question and a user responded that he doubts that I will. This will really not make me happy if I will not be able to, as I have seeked the BAC and Registrar and both said it’s good to go and I’ll be eligible to attend.

My parents are f***ing nuts about my school. I thought I made a good decision. I don’t want my GPA to plummet over some silly BIO class that I really don’t need.

@twoinanddone I keep getting conflict answers. My advisor at the BAC has probably never seen a situation like this, and pretty much just told me “If the Registrar said it’s true than it must be,” which sucks tbh and doesn’t really confirm anything.

@svlab112 I am not too upset with the fact that I gotta make up the credit, I just wanna walk come this May. I don’t wanna have to wait a whole other year just for one class. That’s why I have withdraw from ths I class, knowing that I am able to walk this May and take the make up credits at my transfer school. However, I keep getting conflicting answers at my school, especially from my advisor.

The email you posted above says you can walk in the graduation ceremony. You won’t however, “graduate” until you finish those credits you need. You can take the class this summer or during the fall, making sure you meet the deadlines in the email. There are degree applications involved. Your degree (actual graduation, not just ceremony) will appear on your transcript only after you complete the course. So you don’t graduate officially until that happens. For you the ceremony celebrating your graduation and your actual date of graduation will not be the same.

Your adviser is not making the decision about walking in graduation, nor is she granting your diploma. The officials at the school put it in writing that you can, but you won’t believe it.

Why do you think anyone on CC or reddit can know what your school will do? If you want to walk, walk. If you want to make up the class in the fall, submit the transcript and then you will get a diploma.

How tiny is your college? This sort of thing happens all the time and pretty much every college everywhere.

But, like @twoinanddone said, nobody here knows what your particular school’s policies are—and every school handles this differently. Coming onto CC to ask about this isn’t nearly as helpful as talking to your registrar’s office staff.

@dfbdfb Its a community college, so quite small. The email said that if I decide to make up the credit at my transfer school and graduate this fall, I will still be eligible for May Commencement, as it never said I couldn’t because of this option. So I will just leave it at that.

@NorthernMom61 Yeah I just wanted to make sure that the email wasn’t worded wrong or anything. I think the email would have said if I decided to make up the credits in the Fall, I wouldn’t be eligible for Commencement if that were the case, instead of the first thing him saying is that I would be eligible for Commencement before bringing up the other options.

Just make sure you make up the class and credits as outlined.
