I think I need more money..

new “editions”, lol

The new editions were new additions to her personal library

Thank you everyone, all replies are very helpful and a lot better than trying to figure this out alone

And the international editions of books are cheaper too. Often the page #s dont align with the US editions for some reason, but the content was the same (per my s’s)

Is there a reason you can’t work over the summers? You can earn about $3000 over the summer months because you can work more hours.

Did everyone miss the OP saying that she is already taking out $7000 in fed loans ($5500 direct sub and unsub, $1500 Perkins)?

I thought she said the $6181 is after loans and aid, before work study.

You definitely need to work in the summer to earn enough for books, supplies, travel.

First semester will cost over $3000 and that’s due before you get there and can get a work study job.

You need to have good time management skills. A job, engineering classes, buying groceries and cooking and getting used to going to college, is a lot.

Will the college accept your current health insurance?

Was the scholarship for merit, how much is that and what is the GPA requirement to keep it?

If you go with the 9 months payment plan your parents need to plan on paying 6 installments because your $2500 will only pay for about 3. If parents pay for July, Aug, Sept, Oct, Dec, Feb, then you can earn Nov pmt in Sept/Oct, Jan pmt in Nov/Dec and March pmt in Jan/Feb (your parents might have to add $100 to Jan pmt). Then you might have a few hundred left from working in March/April.

You will need food money, supplies, books. So very important to work in summer.

What about co-ops? You could earn money while gaining experience?

@sensation723 I’ll be in a program with the school called APEX over the summer where I’ll earn up to 8 credits. And they don’t allow us to work.

@mommdc the school is allowing me to take an additional $4,000 in unsub loans

Yes, you can take an extra $4000 in unsub loans if parents apply for Parent Plus loan and are denied.

So that would mean that you are taking out $11,000 in loans and have about $2000 left to pay out of pocket?

@mommdc I have $3,100 to pay left for the year

Jaamin, you don’t need a loan, you need a part time job. To make $342 in a month, you need about $80 a week, which you could make in a single day working at a restaurant. My advice to you - and what I did personally - is to get a basic, entry-level job for nights or weekends. It will pay you more than enough, and you’ll still have time for school.

@djmcdevitt I’m thinking the same thing.

I am still concerned that without any safety net, you could run into issues paying your installments. Think about taking the extra loan money just for your first year in case you need it. If you get plenty of work income to make your payments and build your own emergency fund, you can pay it off early and won’t need to take the extra loan $ Down the road. As some who majored in engineering, I can tell you that your hours available to work may be more limited than you think. Engineering courses are extremely demanding and will require a lot of study time.
