i want to learn everything! HELP!!

similar to igrok, i like a variety of things and i can't choose. i hope someone can give me some suggestions.

i am a chinese junior living the the bay area. i am not good at anything and i don't suck at anything either. some say it is a good thing since i am "well-rounded". but to me, it is simply frustrating because i don't have a direction.

despite the fact i like working with numbers, i dislike physics and trig. i am dealing with a borderline B+ in honors trig right now. and i don't like physics, simply everything seems so... invisible? with all the forces, energy, etc. i did enjoy algebra. i like being logical.

i don't want to be a doctor or spent 7 years in med-school. however, i love biology. i look ap biology last year. i enjoy that class immensely even tho it was extremely hard. i always have a attraction for science. i enjoyed chemistry last year as well. i just dont like physics.

to complicate the problem farther, i am somewhat "artsy". i like being creative. not specifically drawing. but i like projects that allow students to think outside the box. i am planning to take ap art next year.

this year i am taking ap psychology. i absolutely love that class. i love learning about human perceptions. it is not heavily based on biology but there are things about it. i am thinking of minoring in psychology, since i don't think i want to be a psychiatrist. i also enjoys my english class. my friend said that i have a knack for writing despite my grammatical and spelling mistakes (i am sure there are plenty in here).

i also enjoy learning languages. i have taken three years of spanish and a college class on sign language one. the terrible spanish teachers at my school have discouraged me to take spanish any farther. but i am interested in learning german and mandarin and farthering sign language. but i have a probelm, i am very bad at pronounciations. i have a hard time with english and i have a hard time with spanish. it is a real bummer because i like learning languages and other countries culture so much.

i have attempt to think of a career and a major/program that fits my interests. but my mind draws a complete blank.

i have tossed around the idea of applying to cornell hotel school. i first got interested in it through the viewbook at my friend's house. i like the idea of being creative in the corporate world. and cornell seems to have a large variety. but most colleges advertise themselves that way.

i hope i can get some suggestions on different career choices and colleges that provide an education that would fit me.

any help is appreciated!!!! sorry this is so long. i tend to babble.

Hi, Cali
my first suggest to you is not to choose a major - but to look at schools with most of the majors you are interested in. That way, you will have some flexibility once you get there. Schools such as Tufts, Bowdoin, Brandeis, Georgetown, BU come to mind. Although you want to go to school, in the east, you can start visiting west coast schools to get a general idea of the type of school you might light - LAC, large public, medium private, etc. Try to sit in on classes if you can, in addition to doing the info session and tour.

I think you are more typical of your age. Many kids force their way into picking a major because they feel it is the thing to do and get security in having a pat response when asked what they want to do. If you look at the number of times kids change their major at college, you can see that few kids know what direction they want, and so it should be unless you are one of the truly rare birds who have found an early passion. Most colleges have a broad spread of programs, so you won't have a problem finding an array of choices. I think you sound like an interesting kid, and the fact that you are leaving yourself open to choices is a good thing.

thanks for the replies. i really appreciate it.

however, i want some ideas, i supppose. some suggestions of careers and colleges will be a good fit for me and reachable.

i already have my super far-fetched reach schools. uc berkeley (business school: hass) and cornell (hotel school, i am planning to visit this summer). I have visited berkeley and actually sat in an organic chemistry class of several hundred students. i don't mind the large classes that much but it is hard to tell since it is only one class. i also have visited stanford (still debating whether to try or not). stanford's college environment is pretty much what i am looking for.

i am leaning toward a college with a good college town and safe environment. a college with a diverse students. despite the fact i want to go to the east coast, my parents don't seem to be fond of the idea when i have a world rank 2nd college (uc berkeley) near home.

right now, i think i am leaning toward a business major b/c it seems like it would open an array of jobs options. however, business is a bit... vague. what kind of student/person would fit to go into a business major?

if i am not fit to go into a business major, what major should i consider?

i want people's opinions and suggestions because i realized that someone may suggest something that i would never think of.

how's applying undecided and picking a major differs?

anyone, please? help!

My kid is pretty good at everything too, but she doesn't have anything she dislikes. She's undeclared, though she'd like to declare a science major, I personally think she's better at the other side of the brain. Problem is you don't get much rich humanities exposure in HS. I don't think high school classes are any basis for career decisions. Don't worry about a career now, unless you really want to go to a vocationally oriented school. Decide your major around the later part of sophmore year, when you'll have had more experience.

We really can't tell you what to major in because you don't even know yet yourself. You need to find a school what offers many majors. Look at Vasser, Bowdoin, Colby, Skidmore, Dartmouth.

The FLL at Georgetown sounds like a match for your desire to study languages.

I think you might like Film. Go to Brown, Dartmouth, Vassar, etc. places that appreciate learning and self fulfillment.
