^^The classic example is Calfornia. The University of California has 10 campuses and California State University has about 23.

Muratuskan, another one to consider is Berea College.

[Applying for Admission as an International Student | International Students : Admissions - Berea College](http://www.berea.edu/admissions/international/applying-for-admission.asp)

Twomules, I checked UMD, its estimated cost is $23,456 and Morris $18,582.
Susgeek, what is the difference between a college and a university ? It’s Berea College, not Berea University. What should i do to take schoolarship for 4 year tuitions ? On its web site it says ‘The important thing is that, together, these resources cover the entire cost of tuition, which totals $24,100 for the 2010-11 school year. The actual cost to students and their families is $0.’ How ? Is that thing for all students or are there any conditions ?

In answer to your question about GPA, most American high schools and colleges grade on a scale where the top grade of A is a 4.0. Your 4.0 is not a top grade because it is out of 5.0, roughly equivalent to a 3.2 out of 4.0.

College vs. University

Some places call themselves “College”. Usually they only offer undergraduate degrees but some also offer postgraduate degrees.

Some places call themselves “University”. Usually they offer both undergraduate degrees and postgraduate degrees. Often they are made up of several “Colleges” that are focused on different fields of study.

Some places call themselves “Institute”. Usually they specialize in engineering and science.

Some places call themselves “School”, “Academy”, or “Conservatory”. Usually they specialize in Art, Design, or Performance.

Don’t worry about whether the place is a “College”, “University”, or something else. What matters to you is whether or not it has full Regional Accreditation. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_accreditation

Thanks for the explanations happymomof1.
Twomules said that IN THE PAST the State University focused on practical majors such as education, engineering, and nursing. Is that still the same ? Is ______ State University equal to University of _____ ?
I searched universities for every state like twomules said, ____ State University and University of _____.

The cheapest ones are :
University of Arkansas (Pine Bluff) - $5,366
University of Arkansas (Monticello) - $9,690
Louisiana State (Alexandria) - $6,270
Louisiana State (Shreveport) - $8,503
Minnesota State (Moorhead) - $6,918
Southwest Minnesota State - $7,240
South Dakota State - $7,941
University of South Dakota - $8,259

Those tuitions and fees are for out-of-state students. That means they are for international students too, right?
They are the cheapest ones. What do you think about them ? Are they good ? Which one should I prefer, State universities or University of … ?

Generally, but not always, University of – is a more prestigious/selective school than — State. However, there are exceptions (for example, University of Montana is ranked lower, and is easier to get into, than Montana State) and some State campuses may have better specialty areas than some University of – (for example, San Francisco State has a better film program than the University of California, Berkeley).

I am unfamiliar with the schools you listed above, so I won’t comment on them.

Muratuskan, at Berea College everyone has a job on campus, and that pays their bills.

http://www.berea.edu/laborprogram/about.asp

I would contact them if you have specific questions - but I was pleased to see that they tried to have 5% international students.

Murat,

Brother you are better off getting your bachelors in Turkey or failing that a “cheap” European option like Netherlands. UK unis are great at the top level [top 8 odd schools], but yes they charge a packet.

You could then pursue a MA/MSc in the USA which is only a 2 year commitment as opposed to 4. If you want details of UK schools, PM me.

@46,

Achi, for those sums you can find a good UK school, which is (a) much better then any of those listed schools and (b) a solid set up for your USA dream. As a brother, I dont want to see you make a bad decision. Feel free to ask advice and assistance. I am doing my PhD at Kings College London atm.

katliamom thank you for explanation. I got it. I wish you (or someone else) knew about the schools I wrote. I want to have imformation about them. I’m looking for prestigious and cheap school. I found cheap ones like you see but I’m not sure if they are prestigious or not.

susgeek, Berea College is very cool, I mean the tuitions and fees. It says on its web site that "At Berea, we provide students with a remarkable educational opportunity. We award a 4-year, tuition scholarship to EVERY admitted student. ". Wow thats great ! So I won’t pay anything for tuitions ? On a site about American Universities, it’s written that Berea College’s tuition is $910, but on its official web site, EVERY students are awarded with 4-year tuition schoolar ship. I didn’t get that…
Room $3,082 / year
Board $2686 / year
Fees $876 / year
Books and Supplies $750 / year
I can afford that. Oh and it’s good that they have labor programs. Will I earn money ?
What about the education ? Is Berea College prestigious ?

UKdude84 yes I was thinking about UK Universities but they are expensive too so I gave up. Thanks for the advice. I want to ask something, there is 2 opportunity for me. The first one is, I can get my bachelors in Turkey or in Germany or in Austria or in another European country. After undergraduate, I can get my graduate education in the USA 2 years. Thats the first plan. Oh and I’ll be attending to Green Card lottery every year because I want to live in the USA after university and it’s hard to do that without Green Card.
The second plan is, I can get my undergraduate education in the USA in a cheap university and after that I can live in the USA (can’t I?). I’ll be still attending to Green Card lottery…
Germany and Turkey has a opportunity, students can study 2 departments at the same time. For example, you can study English and engineering at the same time. After I graduate, I’ll have 2 certificate. I don’t know about the other countries, what about the USA?

I visited Berea when I was in high school, and I did like it. It provides a quality education. But I can’t say it is “prestigious”.

It is located in a part of the country where our citizens are relatively poor, and that is why it was created - to enable many who are unable to go to college any other way to be able to work their way through. It makes the students truly part of their college instead of just being recipients.

It is good you are asking questions ahead of time and I wish you the best of luck!

I would go the UG in Europe then grad school in USA route. What subject do you want to study?

Thanks susgeek. I saw that there are categories such as Regional Colleges, National Liberal Art Colleges (for example Berea) and National Universities. Generally the cheapest ones are National Liberal Art Colleges. What are the differences between them ? Can you please explain?

And my other questions on message #51 are still effective.

UKdude84 what is UG ?
I haven’t decided which subject to study yet… In non English speaking countries English is important. I’ll study American Culture & Literature if I stay here or go to Germany or somewhere like that. But I don’t think I can find a good job after studying English at college in America. If I studied English in the USA and came to Turkey back, that would be great because I’d have more chance than people who studied English in Turkey. But my aim is to stay in the USA. So I don’t think English will be a good choice for me. I don’t know which subject to choose…

There is no government body that determines what category an institution falls into. This is all invented by the magazines that publish college rankings. One magazine may consider that College X has national status, but another might consider that it only has regional status. Some magazines publish their criteria for classifying and ranking colleges, but others don’t publish this information. You really have to read through what each of them publishes to know what they mean.

Generally speaking, a Liberal Arts College concentrates on teaching undergraduate (or UG) students. If there is a graduate school, it is probably very small, and may only offer one or two programs. The classes usually are smaller - 20 or 30 students in an introductory class.

Generally speaking, a University is larger and is composed of several divisions (usually called Colleges or Schools). Many universities are focused on graduate programs and research. The undergraduate classes might be very large - 200 or more in an introductory class.

When I first heard about Liberal Art Colleges, I thought it’s only for art classes. I mean drawing, music, sculpturing… So a university is more prestigious and well-known than a college ?
Is there anything to do to get Berea’s schoolarship or when I attent, they automatically give me schoolarship ?
If I get high scores on SAT or TOEFL or make my GPA better, can I get financial aid or schoolarship from a university which costs about $15,000 (I want it to cost like $6,000 or $7,000 with schoolarship or financial aid) Is that possible ?

UG is undergraduate.

Join the military. Become an Officer in the Turkish Forces.

“So a university is more prestigious and well-known than a college ?”

No. Prestige is not related to what the place calls itself.

If you would be admitted to Berea, you would automatically receive the scholarship.

None of us can tell you which colleges/universities would admit you and give you the aid that you need. You need to do more research. You can use any of the college search websites to look for places that offer scholarships to international students. Then, you can apply to places that look like they might give you enough aid. You won’t know if they are affordable until you receive your financial aid offers.

If you want to know where students from Turkey have received good scholarship offers, you really need to get in touch with the people at [EducationUSA | Study Abroad, Student Visa, University Fairs, College Applications and Study in the U.S. / America](http://www.educationusa.info/) One phone call or visit would probably answer most of your questions.

Thank you. You all helped so much.

Universities and colleges are not classified by the government, but they are divided into groups by what is known as “Carnegie Mellon” classification. After that, ranking is determined by whatever a magazine decides to use to do its particular ranking.
