First of all i am a junior in highschool (female) and I play basketball. I have lettered on varsity 3 out of 4 years.

The problems are:

if i dont play sports i will major in biomedical engineering (if i do i will chose the regular premed route but i prefer biomedical engineering with hopes of going to medical school. (if i got the opportunity to play basketball at my 1st choice school i dont know if its possible to do biomedical engineering and play basketball..but im not scared to give it a try ... )

My first choice school (and many of the schools on my list) are division 1.

i dont wanna go to a school just because they offer me a basketball scholarship (like some random school in the middle of nowhere)... i have pretty good academics to get some scholarship money at an hbcu (act 26 <-- working on that and gpa 3.97 unweighted 4.5 weighted and will have at least 7 ap/ib courses when i graduate

im the type of basketball player that developed (and am still developing) in highschool i havent been recruited yet ... i work out with lynette woodard (the woman who holds the scoring title for womens college basketball and has recruited before) and she believes i can get a scholarship to play but didnt say what division.. so basically im just hoping because im not all state or all district i wont score over 1000 points (on varsity) in my career and i havent been recruited, my aau team isnt the best and doesnt have all the resources my highschool team isn't a state contender or anything special besides district champs and i really havent had my greatest shine on varsity but i still have one more year left.. but i wanna play basketball in college because i love it so much but i feel like im just running out of time but i put in so much work daily and ican do alot of things my teammates arent capable of but i still sit on the bench ( i guess thats just how sports are)... i feel like i just started playing to late (when i was 14) ... so basically i just want to know what you would do or focus on in this situatuion and should i ... i dont wanna say give up on this dream but i guess thats what i really mean..??

just my top 2 on my college list

North Carolina A&T (Division 1ncaa and an HBCU)

Xavier in louisiana (Naia and an hbcu)

Why not look at Division III schools with women’s basketball teams and engineering programs? I was at Carnegie Mellon for undergrad and new a lot of guys that played varsity sports and still were able to major perfectly well in engineering and other technical majors.

I suggest you post over on the Athletic Recruits forum.

Quick thought tho … you need to take the SAT as well as the ACT. Your grades are great, you need the standardized tests to validate them.

One more thought … if you can get your SAT and/or ACT up high enough, you’d have a shot at some of the best universities out there. Even if you aren’t good enough to play for UConn, Tennessee or Stanford, there are a lot of good D1 schools where you’d get a quality education and either basketball dollars or merit aid dollars.

Post this question over in the recruited athletes section.

Second what cnp55 says. You have the grades to try for the top schools, including some of the DIII schools like Williams and Amherst, which highly value athletes as much as a DI program. Since you are still developing, that might be a way to go.

Lialee, you have posted your ACT score on another thread:
“Math - 28
English-26
Reading-30
Science-20 (Ironic my science score is LOW but I have no problems in the classroom).”

You have also indicated an interest in eventually going to medical school.
For maximum college success, it is a good idea to find schools where your ACT score fits in with the other students. ACT scores are the “great equalizer”, showing colleges how you compare to students across the country, not just in your school.
You know that I really, really support the idea of Xavier for you! It is number one in placing African American students into medical school. The medical students that I have precepted who went to Xavier are VERY good and VERY prepared. I think that Xavier must be doing something really right in preparing students to take the MCAT, also. Xavier gives scholarships for your GPA and your ACT score.
As I have said before, I don’t know anything about NC A&T. Do you know the middle 50% range of ACT score?
You should know that basketball may be the toughest sport to keep up your GPA because it is both semesters, involves a lot of weeknight games and travel. But if you LOVE it and want to play, you could start contacting coaches now. Do yourself a huge favor and look for schools where your ACT score is in the middle 50%, no matter what division.

Yes, and it is always possible to be a walk on, as well.

If you want to go to med school, though, there is nothing more important than your GPA…so, you might not want to go to the world’s most academically rigorous school.

Obviously you are already getting some good advice on this one. Again, good luck to you.
