I work full time but want to go to college, have some questions

Hi all,

I'm 21 years old and never went to college. I essentially blew off high school doing only enough work to achieve a 2.5 GPA and complete the necessary classes in order to graduate. Obviously if I knew then what I know now I would have put some effort into it but there's no sense dwelling on that.

Anyhow, for the past year I've had a serious appetite for academia and am strongly considering attending college. The crux of the matter is I work from 7:30-4:30 M-F, and since working this job is my only chance of going to school (my salary would cover tuition and my living expenses) there is no getting around it. Additionally, I have just enough credits to graduate high school and no more -- if I remember correctly the highest math I have completed is Algebra 1 and I have yet to take a foreign language.

Economics would be my major of choice, but I haven't a clue where to begin my journey. There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer as to what kinds of classes (and how many) I'll need to take before taking the classes necessary to obtain a bachelors degree in economics. I'd love to meet with an adviser but for the next few weeks my schedule won't allow it so I'm hoping to find some information here to tide me over til I can make an appointment.

Any input would be appreciated, even it is just to berate me for asking such a vague question.

My recommendation is to start with one or two classes at your local community college and see how that goes.

I would suggest that you start with a visit to the admissions office of your closest community college. They should have some Saturday hours that would work for you. They have a lot of experience working with students just like you and can help you figure out some of your options.

If you are in, or near, a major city, one or more of the universities there may have extensive course offerings in the evenings or on weekends. Some have separate programs designed for working students.

Wishing you all the best!
