I would like your views... Your words of advice and opinons will be very helpful

What comes to your mind when one says, Barnard College and U of Chicago?

And where would you go, and why?

All opinions and comments are needed - from both guys and girls.. Thanks

the question i wud ask is - tell me more about urself.
are u fun loving, partier who loves outside activities, greek life, etc.? If yes, hmmm...chicago may not be the best place for u...
but if u love intellectual challenges, hard core academics, structured core courses, etc. and dont mind some cold weather...chicago rocks! also it would depend on your academic interests...in physics, economics (and i am sure...i am missing out couple) chicago is top notch...dont know enuf about barnard...good luck...

well i do love intellectual challenges and a focus on academis... and if i wasn't fit for that, i don't think u of c would want me.

weather is not sucha biggie for me, i don't care.

i want to do english literature and art history. i know chicago is amazing for english and history (not sure about art history).

i have to say though i have the mentality of "work hard", "play hard", and definitely have found the balance so far.... i like to have a good time and absolutely adore NYC..
but ultimately, i'm going to uni to study.. not to have a paris hilton-eque social life..

i thought everyone at chicago does Economics hahahaha
but i do know that a lota the chicago ppl are nerds

yeah i heard that chicago has no social life and everyone there are geeks lol.
hey Ive lurked around the columbia boards in november (my dream school at that time) and I saw you there, very enthusiastic about columbia and nyc. You could always take classes at columbia if attending barnard but i guess it wont be the same as being a real columbian student.

for prestige, i'd go to u of chicago (not much prestige but more than barnard). for social life and 'fun' (in my terms), i'd go to barnard. for intellectuality (is it even a word?), i'd go to u of chicago.
personally, i'd go to u of chicago because i know my parents wont pay for barnard cos it doesnt have enuf prestige ness.

college is what you make out of it. if you attend u of chicago, you could always have fun, the funness will be there, u'll just have to search for it.

moast of u chicagoites are cool nerds, I would love to go there but they unfortunately don't offer engineering progams

And trust me social life is waay overrated, U Chicago is awesome in all aspects

NoFX - did you apply to Columbia?
Where are you going now for college?

nomad - pls tell my why you think UChicago is awesome.

Thanks so much :)

In terms of international recognition, chicago >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> barnard

silver, i'm only a junior but my 2 of my cousins go to columbia and some girl who is somehow related to me, goes to barnard so i get my info from them lol
And lol as weird as this sounds,(someone told me) "it's cool to be a geek in u of chicago" if your a geek, u'll fit right in!
i agree with y17k

Are you from NZ?

I'd say I'm not the "stereotypical geek". Someone that knows me or when I first meet someone, they wouldn't think of labelling me as a geek. But I'm a geek in the sense that I love to learn and I appreciate intellectual challeneges - so in this respect UoC is fine for me.
But my concern is the lack of social life.. and the rumours that come along with UoC.
I'm a very social people's person. And I do love to go clubbing and partying. Or just chilling with friends, going for a movie. Going to see a play or a concert. Visiting an art gallery or museum.. Travelling.. Going out for a nice meal.. shopping..

chicago is a wonderful city: great museums, theater, shopping, clubs. Lots of interesting neighborhoods. You will love living there. Chicago's reputation is for quirky, intellectual types, not computer nerds. Check out and compare the course catalogs for depth of offerings in your area of interest and stop worrying so much about social life. It will be fine at either place.

Hah, DVMMOM stole word s right out of my mouth. I visited UChicago for a day ( stayed overnight too) and I found it rather different universities. It wasn't like most state school emraced party everydaybut it wasn't as if everyone just studied and did nothnig else. Furthermore the catalogs and brochures also tell a lot about a university. It ultimately depends on what you want

silver_wavez, read this- I found it quite informative and honest
http://psac.uchicago.edu/profiles/international.html

Thanks ritz, I already read that.
I just wish they put up one for an English/Art History major.

I just got off the phone with Alison Segal, the international admissions officer and a lot of questions have been answered and clarified.
As of now I still have a teeny weeny concern for social life and the guys at U of Chicago.

I don't have any problem with the city of Chicago itself. And for the academics and education I'll get at UoC... I know I'll be fine.. and I'll probably love the learning environment.
But the only thing that I don't like is that the Common Core is sucha big part of the educational experience. It's 1/3 of the whole undergrad education.
And I'd have to take 2 years of some combination of SCIENCE (ick) and math (which is OK).
Whereas at Barnard I don't have that.. and Barnard has an amazing dance program. And the English dept. there is very good too.

I really do have a tough decision. I told Alison Segal that too... and she was obviously very strongly pro-Chicago.. But I need to think about this for a long time.. I need all the time I can get and make the right choice.
At least I can take comfort it whichever I choose I know it will be the right decision and I'll be happy at either.

I'm meeting Alison Segal again when she comes to Singapore on the 29th so hopefully by then I can be like to her I'M GOING TO CHICAGO..
I really am drawn to Chicago for its academics...!!

nomad, did you mean you found Chicago rather different than other univerisities? And if you meant this, how do you mean... what was different about it? why?

didn't read all ther above, personally i got the impression the U of chicago is one of the finest there is, didn't hear anything about bernard...

you should also visit studentreview.com

DanC1986 - Yes, internationally Chicago is far more prestigious..... hmm.. I wonder if this should be a big factor for me though?

Yeh I also went on that site, thanks nomad..

go to U of Chi town...Chicago city rocks man...

ahhh... conflicting advice lol :)

Where do you go indie_boy.. and have are you affiliated with Chicago? are you going there..
Why do you LOVE UoC ? (if you do love it that is..)

I lived in Chi town (Chicago) for 1.5 yrs...UoC is simply great because it has the brand-name (prestige)...

conflicting advice, what do you mean? :)
