I'm probably going to go for the IB diploma, but I'm not sure if its worth it. How important is it whether or not I get a diploma? Do colleges recognize it? Is a certificate enough? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks :)

its not important, it givs you no boost in admissions, its a bunch of stupid extra work, just do ap or certificate

Unfortunately, I never had the opportunity.

But now that I've seen a few college admissions websites, and how insignificantly they regard IB, it seems as though it isn't worth it.

However, the course load isn't that hard to handle, despite what some IB students have to say. (I've seen the course load, it's nothing a dedicated student couldn't handle)

I'm working on my IB Diploma now, but I think that it holds more weight here in Canada than it does in the States.
However, I would take it even if it didn't hold a lot more weight just because I really like the people and the atmospehre of the classes.
It also has a lot of value in that it's a good preparation when it comes to university in areas such as writing papers and "critical thinking" (which is sometimes made up of learning how to sound smart when you don't know exactly what you're talking about ;) )

there's a thread on the first page with incredibly, incredibly complete answers. And non-answers, for that matter :) I think it's called IB vs AP vs Honors.

I did IB and found it immensely rewarding (although love/hate at times).

If your choice is between IB and no higher level (honours, etc) classes, take IB. It's much more enriching than any regular high school curriculum. I found the diploma worthwhile - it's really helped in university. The diploma is better than a certificate. If you're going to do it, you might as well do it all.

If you have to choose between IB and AP, this depends on what you might do in the future. If you want a more broad education and are good at most subjects and unsure about what you want to take in university, IB is a great choice. However, if you want to concentrate heavily in one area (say sciences, because it's hard to take all three with IB), then AP is an option that will help fit that into your schedule.
