IB vs AP vs Gifted/Honors

liberty7va has a point. This thread needs to be locked. It's the same nonsense repeated over and over again.

I like this thread though!

I could have joined this and made things right...,but I didn't have time.

^^Haha, yes you could have.
imagines this thread with Masterus on the scene

Oh no, this thread needs to die :D . I think we covered everything imaginable about IB and AP. Enough is enough.

i agree! both are great programs and both have their positives and negatives . . . end of story!

AP doesn't have any positives, though. So its an unfair comparison.

well there's at least 2000 positives for AP since thats the amount of dollars I'm getting for just taking a lot of the science ones from one of those awards.

Gifted...people should not be getting higher credit for gifted, most of the gifted kids say the stuff they do in their class is bull. Generally, they are given a lot less work "so their brain can can work," it's time to cut the umbibilical cord, I see no reason for gifted in HIGHSCHOOL. That's ridiculous.

I don't care if you're near genius, deal with it. Honors and up should be the only thing getting extra credit.

Also, how do you justify sticking them all in the one class, when there are "different" types of "gifted"... there's an artistic one too.

And, gifted kids shouldn't be able to justfilter into AP like honors kids, I mean we've been working, you guys have been getting on buses and playing with puzzles. Get real, gifted is joke. Have you ever noticed that the most annoying kids in your elementary class were sent away on that bus...maybe somebody was trying to get rid of them.

** Yet AP, has it's own load of bull. Pretentious teachers, test crazed teachers, teachers who teach class like you already know this stuff (turning a page and making comments, just taught us nothing.)

-AP will grant one more credits toward college than IB
-AP is cheaper than IB
-AP is more flexible and has more subject areas
-AP is more indicative of college success in the U.S.
-AP lets students take whatever classes they want
-AP is more nationally recognized
-AP is older than IB, and thus more established
-AP requires critical/analytical thinking
-AP can begin in 9th grade, unlike IB

There. Enough said.

awaiting college is wrong b/c AP does have positives, but Jman is VERY wrong b/c not all the things you claim are completely true and you fail to tell the postives of IB, and the negatives of AP.

What are the negatives of AP? The only one I can think of is it isn't international, and thus not taught from a global perspective.

College Confidential is probably the only place in the world where you can argue about whether AP or IB is better :-D

I cant say the negatives of AP b/c I've never taken AP classes, but nothing is perfect. I'm assuming you've never taken IB, you how do you remain unbiased? You don't!

You're right. I've only heard things about IB; I've never experienced it. But I did a comparison from facts, not opinions.

yet, many of your comparisons are wrong. and your "facts" only show AP is a positive light and IB in a negative light! your comparison is only one sided!

Well, no one has told me yet why IB would be better than AP for a U.S. student! It gets frustrating; I want to know why IB is better for U.S. students. From what I know and have heard from others, AP is much better than IB. It has more advantages than IB. If you think differently, then say something, don't just sit there and say IB is better. Give me reasons why. It's hard to have an arguement when IB students don't contribute!

It really depends on the school and which program it's strengths are..at my school the admin puts all the money and resources (the good teachers) into the IB program so the few AP courses they offer (of which i've taken 4) have been absolute crap. The IB ones however have been worthwhile, but I'm sure at another school i could get similar caliber courses in AP.

For me, taking IB is much more challenging than AP would be which is why I don't mind it because it's a challenge, I feel like the constant essay writing might actually be helping me out in the long run.. but i dont really know for sure

Ive said my arguments a couple times and so have others. The reason why this debate ceased to continue is because it could go on forever. There is no answer to this. To be honest, I'd probably support AP if I took AP. However, I take IB, so naturally I support it. This is like one of those history questions asking you to argue who/what caused WWI. Each program has its (dis)advantages. But I still like IB better :)

Such generalizations! You seem very biased towards AP.

-IB is free for me and all the kids in my county; the county pays for it.
-IB does offer choices of subjects just like AP. Some schools do not offer many IB classes AND AP classes. This just depends on the school.
-AP and IB are indicative of college success in the U.S.
-IB does offer choices in the 6 subject areas
-IB is internationally recognized
-IB is more established internationally and many colleges are becoming more familar with the IB program.
- AP and IB require critical/analytical thinking
-IB can begin in 9th grade as pre-IB

Just representing the other side..........
