I was wondering if anyone has had a child attend on of these camps.
Want dear child to learn Python and/or Java in a supportive environment with hand holding if required.
Any reviews, tips, etc
Age of child is 13 y/o female

DS19 went to one the summer he was 13. I think he learned a lot . I’m not sure if there was any hand holding though.
DD [now 25] went to a couple of their camps during middle school. The quality varied. One on creating games was very, very good: attentive instructor and awesome $$$ software for use. Can’t remember what the other one was.
My son attended filmmaking for 2 years (did the same camp twice, I think in 8th and 9th grades). He enjoyed it and I thought the program was well-run. He did the overnight camp held at American University.
My S went to a programming one after 9th grade. Good experience. Not too costly and he enjoyed being with other computer “nerds.” I’d say after 8th or 9th grade is a perfect time. Also a good experience if your school doesn’t offer much in the way of computer programming. (Ours didn’t). Gives the kids a nice taste of what’s involved.
D has agreed to go next summer between 8th and 9th grade. Thank you all for your reviews.
Yes it was fine. My two kids attended for a couple of summers.
D’s good friend did ID Tech three years running. She liked it better when she was younger. They don’t allow kids to leave campus which annoyed this girl when she was older. Also, and I am not sure if it’s true at all locations, but it cost extra to stay at weekends. We thought that was money grubbing, given that it is very expensive, and in fact did not enrol D in the program for that reason, as it was going to cost an extra several hundred dollars for the one weekend. So, I think for a younger teen, it’s probably great, but not quite as much for older teens. She did learn a lot and enjoyed it.
So long as your kid doesn’t already know programming, it is a good (but expensive) camp. DS17 went to their C++ camp after 7th grade when I thought he only knew Python and Java. Turns out he’d already somehow picked up as much C++ as they taught at the camp, so he was kinda bored.
My daughter did several and had a good experience at each. One summer she was the only girl in the whole camp, but the instructor was female.
If D does indeed go she will be at the UT Dallas or TCU location as a day tripper.
