Idea for dorm furniture: what do you think? (long)

if I were your roomate I'd be thoroughly freaked out

First of all, it's perfectly with your /rights/ to make this kinda structure if all of your stuff (including desk/etc.) takes up 1/2 of the room or less.

And it is dually both really cool and really odd. I myself wouldn't mind a neat little box like that, but I think that if I met anyone who actually went through the elaborate process of making it, I'd think they were TOTALLY out of their mind.

The first thing I thought when I read this was: "Locked doors around your bed? SOMEBODY plans on doing a lot of self-loving :P".

If you want to get the reputation of being very odd immediately this kind of thing should be perfect. Haha. But hopefully you'll dispell the initial rumors by being mostly normal outside of your "fortress of solitude" as the poster above calls it. Haha...

Somehow, I don't see the college being thrilled about that idea should they happen to find out. It's a possible safety hazard for starters, and they also might not like the idea of you actually building things in your dorm room when you're ideally not meant to have to bring any furniture at all.

I do know for sure that if I were assigned to a room with a person that wanted to build a box in the corner and then live in it, I would be very creeped out and try to get a room transfer almost immediately. I like my privacy too, but I like the idea of someone doing god-knows-what in a locked wood box behind me while I don't even know if they can see me from inside that thing a whole lot less. At which point I'll bet the college would tell you to cut it out rather than let you go through six different roommates over the course of the year.

BlahDeBlah: this "furniture" contains everything I own...and it actually says that the students are encouraged to bring their own things. They even offer free storage to the out of state students...and they dont consider sleeping below a water bed to be a safety hazard (yes, my school lets you have water beds), so maybe that says something

I have their up to date housing guidebook...it is completely un against the "rules" so long as the school does not change its policy. If this were a loft or bunkbed, or in other words, if someone had stuff above, or sat atop of the structure, then there would be a problem.

Christ, if the chick has that much of an issue, I'll just take out the two middle sections to where it looks something like a bunkbed. This way she can constantly see what I'm doing, I can constantly see what she is doing, and I'll be all over her s.hit if something comes up missing or moved around.

-hmm....maybe I'll just let her choose when the time comes

and again...if she gets paranoid, if she needs me for whatever reason, the door will open for her. When I am not there and it is locked, the resident dean (or other person) will have a copy of the key should they need to search or something.

You're absolutely insane.

go to Target.

http://tinyurl.com/gmtkc
http://tinyurl.com/fc49r

those are 2 of the ideas...sorry the pictures are so crappy.

It'll be really cramped in there. Are you sure you can deal with that? Looking at your drawings, I'm not sure I see where your desk and TVs/stereos will go... Will you have a chair in there at all?

those things would go on the shelving units in the walls. Sorry, thats just a view from the top down...that gigangic thing that says "structure" is where it would all go. Nah, no chair, just the bed. There is no floor space to stand up in or anything.

I've lived in the back of a semi truck pretty comfortably, and actually enjoy the small space. Afterall, its easy to organize and less to clean.

What happens if a conjugal visit by either you or your roommate happens? I can't picture those circumstances at all.

As a college senior, I can tell you that if you plan on doing work on a desk while sitting on your bed, its uncomfortable, unproductive, and terrible for your back.

What kind of cooling system do you have planned? I know you'll have fans for the electronics and stuff, but still, wood retains heat, no? You'll be baking inside.

I know, it does get uncomfortable sitting on a bed like that...I go through that now as a hs student. it makes your a.ss hurt after like 1/2 an hour, which is why I designed a seat like thing that would go on the bed that has a solid bottom so it doesnt hurt.

When I said fans earlier, I meant those little ones that are on the electronics themselves, that cool the electronic but make the area around it hotter...those fans would be connected to hoses that lead to the outside. I've also got roof vents so that I dont asphyxiate (*sp) my self, and am considering some kind of fan system. I dont even know if they allow those in room ac units. If they did, I'd be all over it. I'll have to check. If not, fans'll do.

and the visiting thing...well, if it was me, I'd go to a crack hotel for the night...

If this is what you mean though, yeah, it would be REALLY weird if I open the door (as I cant hear much inside) and see...

I would only hope that after long enough, she would figure out my academic schedule and work around it...or I would just tell her.

yeah, that would be realllllyyyyyy not cool.

I think you should get some psychological help

Well I still think this plan is somewhat insane, but to each her own. Good luck with it and be sure to post pics when its done.. :) :) :) I'm a MechE myself, so I have a soft spot for building stuff.

I think you should just get an apartment.

As much as I had my own room my entire life, I wouldn't go to that length to have my own private space...you should just request a single or get an apartment off campus. And I agree with Spanks that you should see a psychiatrist. Or just get an apartment...unless you're in like New York City where rent is like a million dollars a month...just get a room divider if you want a private space, but ask your roommate first.

Maybe have the structure thingy, and then keep your bed outside. The box is simply too small for a bed.

you are exactly the reason why everyone dreads having a roommate.

I'm not allowed to live off campus, thats the thing!

Seriously, I have to live on campus for atelast 2 years...its school policy

Have you ever heard of a single?

why don't you just put a sheet up from the ceiling above each end of your bed that is not touching the wall? That plan would appear mildly normal and you could just pretend you're trying to block out sunlight in the morning.
