<p>Lots of kids are admitted to CS programs with little computing experience. The OP’s question was what MIGHT improve the odds. Programming languages (multiple!) show interest. In the old days assembling a kit computer and/or cobbling together a network from discarded computer parts was good … perhaps less so today.</p>
