If a school sends you a free application??

Does it mean that you're likely to be admitted to the school or does it mean something else??

Nope. It just means they want to increase their admission numbers, haha. Probably to reject most of them and look more “selective.”

What do your parents do with all the “free applications” for credit cards they receive?

It really only means they got your name and address, maybe from the PSAT, sometimes from a visit or inquiry. When they send these, they have no official info on which to project an admit.

What about fee waivers?

I mean fee waivers.

It means you and thousands of others, are being targeted by them. The “free app” or fee waiver is just a tool. And guess what? It works! There schools, which before were perhaps never on your radar – will get you to look at their website, dig for more info, etc. And you might apply – cuz the mailer makes you feel wanted.

But it’s Marketing 101. Simple.

Fee waivers, invites to apply, same issue. One of mine got an actual signed letter from a coach, for a sport she never was good at. If you have met with regional rep and it comes directly from him/her, I’d say that’s encouraging- but they haven’t seen your record (technically, Ferpa prevents a real look, at that point.) So, decide in the usual ways whether you are a good candidate- and interested- and if you are, take advantage of it. (No damage done by using a fee waiver.)
