So if there is a school where all of your sats are above their 75 percentile, would that make the school at least a match, even if you have only okay grades. Or would it make it a low match/safety with solid grades?
For example my SATs are 750,720,740, and Oberlin's 75th percentile for scores are 740,710,730. Does that mean I will most likely get into Oberlin?

Depends on the school and the school’s admission rate, really. There are some schools that I wouldn’t encourage anyone to think of as ‘safeties’ just because their admissions rates are so low that they’re not really ‘safe’ for anyone.

In the case of Oberlin, I would say the school is not a safety for you. Oberlin admits about one-third of its applicants, number one. Number two, your scores are only slightly higher than the middle 50% of it’s enrollees (10 points on each section). Number three, Oberlin is the kind of school that can and will turn down students with high scores and grades for personal factors because it’s a liberal arts college.

It’s a match school – a match that you are likely to get into, but a match nonetheless. SAT scores are only one part of your package – you can’t judge a school a “safety” solely based on that unless your scores are much, much higher than the average admit.

Ok cool. Thank you.
