So I'm thinking of reapplying to colleges next if if I don't get accepted into any good ones this year. I've noticed that (at least for MIT), they ask you if you've applied before.

Does this mean they look at your previous applications?

Would I need to take an interview again next year?

Thanks!

Most schools will ask you whether you’ve applied before and when you applied.

They probably will not look at your previous application, however, they will look through their files to see what admissions decision you were given the last time you applies. It certainly does raise a red flag for a college if they find that they have previously rejected you.

And no you will not have to do the interview again - they will use the notes that are available from your interviewer.

Is your plan to take a gap year and reapply?

If so, the key is for you to make your gap year a compelling year of personal, and possibly academic growth. If the gap year is anything less, then your application to the “same” schools is unlikely to be taken seriously by the schools where you were rejected.

But(!) one consequence of a year of reflection and growth may be that you’ll have a different way of thinking about college, and you’ll pick a new set of schools to apply. A fresh perspective is key.

Thank you for the responses!

Yes I’m planning to take a gap year and reapply.

Just one more question though. Audrey said I don’t need to take another interview. But can I if i want to? (like if i did poorly on this year’s interview).

I’m not sure, I think you will have to take your interview with a different interviewer and have them send their notes to the college. Again, i’m not 100% sure so check with the college.
